Because your birds will be out of the MHP brooder by the time your F-I-L gets his chicks!! Unless "soon" is in the next 4 weeks, then I guess he will have to build his own.
It's pretty darned warm down there, I bet if you brood yours outdoors, my guess it they'll be ignoring the MHP cave by about 3 weeks.

Ah! Oh yeah. Mine didn't even come into the house. They went straight to the nursery coop outside. My heating pad was only $13 (I caught it on sale), but I have plans for it after the chickens are done with it -- to germinate peppers, among other things -- and my father-in-law can get his own. :)

Is that sour cream container a nipple waterer? I would love to make one of those for my babies. I have one of those pint-sized waterers like your feeder in the background, but it gets SOOOOOO messy and gross when they all start hopping around it kicking shavings into it. Is it just a matter of putting the nipple on it and that's that?

Yes, the container is a nipple waterer. I put 5/16" holes in the flat surface on the bottom and screwed the nipples in. I tested it overnight before the chicks arrived to make sure it didn't leak. The first one I made leaked. Make sure you get the nipples in perfectly vertical. If they don't hang vertically, they leak.

I debated on buying a bag but I had heard if it didn't move they wouldn't care. But on the same hand I have yet to see one with oatmeal and seed in it. Thank you for the advice, I'll have to hit our two week old TS and grab a bag today. Those girls are scratching their feed everywhere I'm positive they're bored.

I think that might be true because even with live worms, if they are paralyzed from digging them up they are nervous to go for them but eventually one does. Mine absolutely LOVE this stuff though. And they have all sorts of other kinds too. :) another thing my girls love is cracked corn and also BOSS (black oil sunflower seeds) but especially cracked corn. Should be limited though and more of a cold weather treat but sometimes I cave as they love it so. And for some reason, they LOVE bread. And I recently discovered they love broccoli and kale too. Kale they rip to shreds, broccoli they pull all the little heads off. So if they party mix doesn't work (it shoudl though :p ) maybe try one of those, of course with chick grit. :)

Haha!  A secret panel to hide them away in!  We already figured we will probably keep all that are pullets and since they get 5x8 of the coop at 4 sq feet per chicken...  We are not allowed roos, and there is a lady two doors down that has the Animal Control on her speed dial.  We have a leash law in our county where if your dog is outside of a fence they must be on a leash.  She will come out and film with her phone if anyone has their dog outside off leash, so I know there would be no possibility at all of keeping a rooster with her around.

Wow that is dreadful! Does she have nothing better to do with her life? Probably best to not start fights but I would honestly write an anonymous letter and ask her that lol

Thanks!! I'm going to order some nipples right now. ( I love overnight shipping.) I also watched a YouTube video on how to make a big 5 gal waterer for the run. Yay! :)
