Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Chicks made a move this weekend :D We wracked our brains for 2 weeks to try and figure out a way to make a run for them attached to the main coop, but couldn't figure out how to do it and be able to keep the bigs and littles separate, so because of our main coop set up it just wasn't going to work. BUT, my mom had a small coop that she wasn't using anymore and so she's letting me use it and my hubby made a pen around it, not huge but enough for a few weeks as we integrate them all.

I wasn't sure what to do with the MHP and then realized that it's pretty warm out now, they're 5 weeks tomorrow, nicely feathered and it was down to 1 anyway in their brooder in the main coop, I just unplugged it and stuck it in the corner of their new coop...went out last night to shut the little window thing and they were all on the roost! First night out there! LOL! Okay...I see you're BIG chickens now!

So apparently they don't really need it, but I'm just going to leave it for now??

Nah, you can take it out completely. I would.

Is there an age range you find most compliant......set up for these integration....and trouble you've had and solutions?
Yes, you should write an article!!

Like @Blooie I've had no trouble up to about 2 weeks.

Actually the younger the better, I think 2 weeks and under "No Problem".

I just kind of look at them and see if they are close enough in size. I also raise them next to each other so they see their future pen mates too.

Thought I'd pass this along in case it would be helpful to someone. Seems our little flock is determined to hang out on top of the MHP most of the time during the day. Some stay up there during the night as well. Some go under. As you can imagine, the top of the MHP gets ugly in a hurry. We've started putting puppy pads on it and changing them out every day or 2. Way easier than removing the heating pad and cleaning or changing the press and seal all the time.
