Mamma gave up on eggs too early!

It's more about the average temp, the hen gets on and off the eggs throughout the days. It takes longer for the internal temp to change, so slight changes here and there are fine.

Look for the air cell to draw down, meaning it will shift and elongate from where it was, and you will see it start to creep up into the fat end of the egg. That's when they are really getting into position.
Or as granny just said, you can wait until it internally pips. Give or take a day or so isn't going to cause much problem.

Good luck!
The air cell is large, but I don’t know exactly how large you are talking about. It takes up a bit less than half of the egg. Probably closer to a quarter. I think I will wait a couple days at least just to make sure I don’t accidentally harm the chick.
Also, I was sitting there by the incubator and one second it was at 100 degrees and the next it was at 106? This was the first time I have seen this happen. It there a way to prevent this? It is in a draft free location that is always between 70 degrees and 65.

didnt you turn the heat up earlier ? I would put it back where it was . not sure how it works w/ just one egg but late in the game chicks start making their own heat and you are supposed to lower the temp just a hair. Cooler is way better then too warm.

yes, I kinda freaked out for a moment. i opened it up a bit until the temp was back down to 100. it was very frightening.

That is scary. But depending on what kind of incubator, and your thermometer, it may just go up and down as the heater kicks on and off. But you definitely don't want it to stay at 106, that's definitely deadly.

Totally agree!

yes, I turned it back down to 99.6. It seems to be doing better.

Ok. I got some pictures. They aren’t very good, but better than nothing I guess.
Egg 1 (alive) ETA: air cell is not that saddle shaped, I think the angle the picture was taken was odd.
