I have about 30 free range chickens on an acre of land. Unfortunately they seem to congregate in our main walking areas and therefore leave an excessive amount of droppings where they're most inconvenient. We spend a lot of time cleaning them up. Does anyone have any suggestions for drying the droppings out quickly or otherwise making the mess more manageable?

When some of mine sneak over the fence on to the patio or side walk and make a mess I put dirt on the poop let sit for a bit then sweep it off

Welcome to Backyard chickens. You'd think with all the free ranging area, they would use that for their bathroom. A lot of folks complain about them messing on the sidewalks or patios or close to the house doors.

This happens a lot if they know people come out of the house and give them treats. If this is the reason, don't give any treats till you have walked them someplace more acceptable. If they know you go out the back door. Stop doing that, and maybe use the front door, and walk around to their area, so they don't know where you came from.

Otherwise you can use lattice panels to fence off areas to keep them out. If nothing works, they will just need to be satisfied closed up in a run.

Keep a bucket of sawdust or fine pine shavings to sprinkle on droppings to dry them out quickly. They can then be swept away more easily.
