Managing Your Flock and the Importance of Necropsies - Contains Graphic Picures and Video

Interesting. I have a hen I need to euthanize. Right now, I am sick, so it will have to wait a few days. I don’t believe she is suffering, but she is not well.

She is older, and I got her last year as a group of hens to try to breed. I don’t know how they were raised, but they did not seem very healthy. I thought I could give them some TLC and that they might lay for me.

Last night, around dusk, I found her outside the coop, with her comb bloodied again. The poor girl, the blood was running into her nostrils, causing her to gasp for air. I separated her in a garage last night, and this morning she drank and drank and drank. I suspect they know she is not well and were trying kill/exclude her. She has had a bloody comb before, and tail feathers picked off also. I will not necropsy, as I have only had her for a few months.

@casportpony Thanks for this information!

Change of plans. When I went to check in on the girl tonight, she seemed pretty perky. And lo and behold, she laid an egg! She may just be getting bullied, but for now I think she is healthy enough to keep for sure.
Glad she is better.

I'll comment here.
OTC antibiotics have been greatly restricted because of overuse, improper use, and problems with the development of drug resistant bacteria.
Antibiotic laced livestock feeds have not been a good thing either, and have been removed from the market for the same reasons.
New backyard poultry owners, as a group (huge generalization here!) want avian veterinarians but aren't interested in paying for their services.
Having necropsies done is necessary to find out what happened, and if something contagious is present. Otherwise it's a guessing game!
More veterinarians would be interested in learning about poultry if more owners were willing to use their services!

That white/yellow stuff around the lungs, looks like it is outside of the lungs constricting trachea maybe? Was that stuff solid or goopy?

Is that the whole lung or part of it?
Can't quite tell and they can be hard to get out intact from between the ribs.

Lung looks well oxygenated, nice and red?

Great pics!
Might want to add 'Graphic' to the spoiler tab.
