I felt the same as you when i first saw mandarin ducks. I got over it and i fell in love with the white call ducks that sundownwaterfall now has. I think you should go to sundowns page and look at them. If i was going to get any, i think it would be them. They might be plain ol white, but when you see them, you should see their beauty is not plain at all. That my opinion anyway

You don't need a permit to just keep wood ducks for yourself, that was my understanding. I have paperwork that my woodies were captive bred, but I do not have a permit. I cannot sell the eggs or birds without a permit, but I can keep them here to enjoy for myself.

I think you are covered as far as the feds are concerned, I don't know about the birds you hatch for your own enjoyment, I thought they had to be accounted for. Make sure you don't also need a state permit. Some states require them.

That is correct. I recommend everyone to check the USFWS site before purchasing any wild species to find out what they need. Some species that do not breed in the US are still covered: Bahama (White-cheeked) Pintail and European Wigeon. Mandarins are not covered under the law and can be sold without a permit.

You can purchase the birds and own the birds, but you cannot sell them, their eggs, or any part of them without a permit and having the birds marked in a way that proves they are captive: seamless band, pinion or toe clipped. You don't need to the permit to raise these species, just mark them with one of the mentioned.

On another note, the Mandarins have started laying here in Missouri!!

To add to Dan's reply, when you purchase a Wood duck or another migratory waterfowl from a breeder, you will/should receive an FWS Form 3-186 and like was said above the bird should be marked. The form is your proof that you purchased the bird legally.

Example of Form 3-186

If for some reason you were questioned/checked by your local DEC and did not have proof of your purchase or had in your possession a migratory waterfowl that was unmarked (FWS says it must be done before six weeks of age) you are asking for trouble.

To sell birds you must have an FWS Waterfowl Sale and Disposal permit and also need to comply with your state requirements. As an example..........In the state of NY, I have the FWS Waterfowl Sale and Disposal Permit and I am required to carry a NYS Domestic Gamebird Breeder "A" permit.

FWS Waterfowl Sale and Disposal application

As for costs..........the last time I purchased the FWS Waterfowl Sale and Disposal permit it was $75 and is good for 5 years, the NYS permit is $50 a year.
