Yes we were really trying to be diligent in keeping the chickens protected. Especially since we knew that this guy and his two brothers were in the neighborhood. We had been seeing the three of them on and off during the summer. They would hang out in the vacant lots in the area. I was always hoping they would move on or get hit by cars. One down...
 
You should shoot in the heart and lungs not the head if you are worried about rabies. The disease is carried in the brain, shooting in the head can splatter it. The disease dies off as soon as the body cools, I believe below 67 degrees.
 
Thanks Madman. The reason for the head shots was that in the city limits all I can get away with is a .177 cal pellet gun. I was worried about penetration with the low powered slug. Didn't want to wound him and have him come back again.

I was not too worried bout rabies, he didn't act that way. He just had mange and was desperate to eat (really desperate!!)
