Hello fellow Manitoba members!
Does anyone have any experience with keeping chickens in an area that typically does not allow them, because after all, they are very 'exotic' animals?! Lol
I REALLY want to keep some, we cannot afford groceries MOST of the time... But we cannot, we live in town ( but sort of on the edge).

I too plan on raising them despite the rule no livestock in residential areas. I will not be keeping roosters for the obvious reasons. I have spoken to my neighbours and they are ok with the idea. So I don't see a problem however, worst case scenario, I get a letter, butcher the hens and raise rabbits since they apparently are not considered livestock. :)

Well see, this is the crazy part...Winnipeg, Steinbach, and several other cities do not even consider chickens livestock...they consider them 'Exotic' pets...grouping them right in there with poisonous snakes!? Like really?! How daft can people be!!!
I for one, have never heard of a chicken biting someone and thus killing them... Has any body else?

I have barred rock and some silkies for incubators:) There's also two unintended cross breed barred rock/ silkies. I love the look of the Barred rock, they are good layers, cold hardy and dual purpose. What breed were you looking to get?

Well, if you're ever interested, we often have a barred rock clutch brooding under a silkie. I bought my breeding pair from a woman in Beausejour a few years ago. Now I have 8 laying hens. Ive thought about getting some plain jane white leg horns simply for their superior egg production. We'll see.

Sorry about that. My computer cable cacked on me and I just got one in from work:)
Right now I'm keeping this clutch, but if they sit on another you're welcome to them for $5/chick. Or you can have some fertilized eggs if you have an incubator, for $1/egg.

Hi All, I am in Gimli visiting from Alberta. Thought I'd see if anyone in this area has any heritage breed pullets for sale? We have a flock of BO, BR and GLW in Alberta that I would like to add to. Looking for heritage breeds that aren't the same that we already have.
Heading home Aug 8. PM me if you have some for sale in this area!

I live in Minnedosa, north of Brandon. We have bcmarans, barred rocks, silkies, mixed sussex, americaunas, chanteclers, muscovy ducks and geese. I was wondering if any of you fellow tobans know of anyone with white chanteclers for sale. We have two hens and need a roo so we can hatch some eggs in the spring.
