Letting kids run wild in restaurants or other places in which they really shouldn't is one of mine. Two examples:
I was out to eat with a friend at a local bar and grill. Very good food there for a good price, and generally a good ambiance as well. While we were there, a family with three kids of about 10, 8, and 6 were sitting behind us. They let those kids run around like hellions! They would run past our table, they were crawling across the floor, they almost knocked over people on the ramp up to the main dining area. I actually looked at my friend and said, "Reign in your kids!" (Is it reign or rein?) I said it loudly and know my voice carried. The family left soon after, thankfully. I commented to my friend that my three year old doesn't even do that! She may be up and wandering around a little if we get a little too long with conversation, but usually someone goes with her.
The other example was at the doctor's office. My daughter needed X-rays yesterday, so we were in the lab waiting room. Another mother came in with her son and daughter. Her son was a holy terror. He looked to be about two or three years old. He was running around, trying to get in doors where only hospital personnel are allowed, trying to get behind the desks where the admitting people were, running up to the fish and saying, "BOO!" at the top of his lungs. There were elderly people around. If he had run into any of them...And the mother just said, in a quiet voice, "No, honey, don't do that. Come back here."
Uh huh, any kid is going to listen to that. It was bad enough that my daughter said, "He's naughty, isn't he mom?" Once my daughter and husband went back for her X-rays, I sat behind a newspaper so I didn't have to witness it too much. I know that sometimes people get their hands full, but I overheard her tell a friend that was there with her own kids that she opted to not have him stay home with his dad today, even though he could have!
The most I let her get away with there is walking to the children's table to get a book or two and coming right back. And she says excuse me when she bumps into someone or needs around someone!
