Maple Tree Whirligigs

I have a silver maple tree next to the chicken run and they ignored it. Hated that tree, such a soft wood and each time a hard thunderstorm or high winds (from storms or ice/snow) they would break easily.

Red maple, I think you can tap. Silver Maples, no.

And no, they do not eat the seedlings, sorry! You have to manually pull them out or keep them mowed over. I have a garden directly over the maple tree and had to pull them out manually. I can not wait to cut that darn thing down!

Sure you can.
WHAT KIND OF TREES? The trees suitable for tapping include all of the maple family: sugar, silver and red maples as well as box elder. Sugar maple sap contains the highest concentration of sugar (2% or higher according to weather conditions and the health of the tree). Box Elder produces a weaker sap, but one which is especially delicious to drink as is, tasting like a slightly sweet spring water. Other species of trees which reportedly may be tapped including walnut, hickories, sycamore and sweet birch. Trees to be tapped should be at least 1 1/2 feet in diameter, have large healthy crowns, and be well exposed to the sun.

Gee ya'll, PEOPLE can eat maple seeds! Ha ha, I'm not kidding; I just confirmed my old hobby - native foods - and its easy to look up on the web.
