Maple's kitten adventures...

ok, so like some speculated... orange torti is a girl and other one is a boy.

I'm pretty sure. That's what it looks like.

I had such a busy day yesterday that I didn't get much chance to check in, and now I see you have kittens!

So sorry the little one didn't make it, but that just happens sometimes. At least she was safe and warm for the little bit of life she did have.

The other two are so very cute! And Mama sounds like a good mommy cat. I was paranoid about Jasmine's kittens. I weighed them every day on our kitchen scale, to make sure everyone was getting enough to eat! LOL When they are a little bigger, you can figure out whether they are boys or girls. Many websites show the differences and how to tell. I couldn't immediately but I don't have a lot of experience, either. By the time I took them for their first vet visit (3 or 4 weeks old) I was pretty sure we had 5 girls. I was right.

You and your girls will have so much fun watching these two grow up! Kittens are such fun anyway, and watching Mama take care of them and teach them is so amazing!

Congratulations!

Torti is most likely girl. Most are. Jazzy's are tabby/torti's. She's a brown tabby and white. Doesn't much matter tho. They are all cute!

its VERY rare to get a tortie male, so shes likley a girl, though ive never seen an orange based tortie usually black with orange patches not the other way round) so shes going to be a very cool looking little kitty

given the size difference id say you have 2 differetn daddies for this litter too, the orange kitten looks a good 3-5 days older than the little ones. this is fairly normal

im sorry you lost #1, its a hard lesson for the girls, but it is a good one, life is fragile and you did wll you could to help that little one thrive, sometimes no matter what we do we loose one...you tried, and that in itself is more than some folks in this world can say.

personally im of the 'pick the babies up daily" mindset when it comes to animals, as long as momma isnt stressed, let your girls go in there 1 at a time and touch/hold each kitten for a few seconds right now...if momma seems stressed or upset, then give her a couple of weeks, but even while still blind and deaf, the more short pleasent interaction they have with humans the easier it is to get well rounded kittens...

ive raised many litters, (have one right now) and each morning and then again before bed, from the day of birth, assuming mommy cat is not showing signs of stress, i spend just a few seconds, i pick each one up, give it a gentle pet touch its toes, weigh it and then put it back...
it SOUNDS like your momma kitty is very mellow and wouldnt mind either.
weighing them, especially with orange kitty so much bigger than her sibling, is a good idea to make sure shes nor monopolizing all the milk.

also spend a few mins each day a couple of times a day giving momma a check over, with only 2 kittens you want to make sure all the niples are getting use so she doesnt develop any mastitis issues, ive found momma cats seem to like their tummies rubbed so i make it a big part of some quality time, gently feel each mamary gland, give if a gentle squeeze, it should be warm and if full should feel full and but still have a little give...if it feals HOT, or like a big hard lump there could be an infection forming.
its rare, but does happen with small litters. ive found the best way to prevent it is to make sure the kittens are feeding off different nipples a couple of times a day.

oh and another RULE of mine is a new picture every day

its easier to see them grow that way.

i love raising kittens, i frequently end up being found by stray pregnant kitties, so ive been through it a few times lol, its heart breaking AND joyus all at the same time.

side note, let me know where to send the self adressed box so you can pack up that little orange kitten once shes old enough and send her my way

Mama does seem to enjoy her tummy rubbed. Thanks for the advice.

My girls are off to school. Mama likes any and all attention and doesn't mind about her babies being handled. Like when I wiped off orange ones tooshy and it cried for mama...she just came up to investigate and then hopped back in her box when I put her back. My 5 year old was doing some slight handeling earlier before preschool...she would pick up and move the orange torti and say, "Get your own boob."

Out of the mouths of babes!

So for the loss of the little one. She is now in Gods hands healed and purring. I was sitting hear annoyed that Luna kitty wouldn't get her butt of my hand as I tried to type, but no knowing what it's been like for you; I sit here with all my "babies" surrounding me knowing I am truely blessed to have them all just as that little one was blessed to have you. My baby Bashful (a gray torti) is there at the "Bridge" to keep her company and show her the way.

Its great that the mama birthed okay, but i have a question, did you steal someones cat?I understand the need to help every animal you come across that is skinny or ragged, but it is still stealing. You have no idea the home situation, was she recovering from a sickness?was she rescued recently by the people you took her from?how could you know did you talk to them?I have taken in several homeless cats and had to explain to people that they are like that cause i just got them.I only read up to pg 9,then skipped to 12,so excuse this post if this has already been addressed.

She found the cat at an abounded house one other cat had already been hit by a car and killed, she took her to the vet and that's how she found out that the kitty was pregnant.

She put in her first post that the house was abandoned. As a person who probably did steal someones cat, let me tell you it can worry you. In my case it was the night before we were moving out of town. Two boys were chasing (meanly not trying to catch) a black kitten about 6 mos old. They were chasing him into a highway. I rescued him from them, and then took him with us when we left the next day. To this day my husband teases me about stealing some little old woman's kitten, or a child's. I still feel twinges of guilt. This was 15 years ago.
