There is a member on marans usa that charges 12.50 per egg. which is roughly 150.00 dozen. I really don't think the eggs are that dark. I do believe with marans the darker the egg, the better the quality of the bird. The usa member have the darkest eggs I have ever seen but way out of my price range. I just bought 100% wade jean eggs on ebay for 58.00 so just keep your eyes open.
Now from what I understand the darkest eggs do not mean the bird is of standard. People are trying to obtain dark eggs more so than keeping the birds appearance up to standard.
I am no eggspert and am a new marans owner but I want my birds to remain true to the French Standard (not American) so that means watching egg color as well as the birds standard appearance.
This is just what I was told by a very good breeder who raises French standard birds.

I like the french standard too. I agree with you on both counts, but if you don't have an egg color of at least 4-5 probally not a great quality.
That's what I am going to try to get. After reading how rare, and what the going price on these guys is going, I'm going to build them something along the lines of my indoor quail pen to keep them happy safe.
