There is a sepereate Bantam Standard published by the ABA, Marans are accepted to the ABA

Just to clarify, bantam marans are ABA recognised. The ABA does not recognize any large fowl; outside their pervue.

Understand, things have changed greatly through the years.

A number of breeds that were recognized by the ABA in years past were done so with no qualifying meets: sometimes even NO BIRDS PERIOD. A prime example would be the Nankin. When Mrs. Herring wrote the breed description (according to her letters) she had never seen a live Nankin. Considering that, she did a marvelous job: for the most part!

Actually, when the Nankin Std. was written, Dempsey was the only person in the USA that had the birds. He had only recently imported them from Ms. Peters of the UK.

I don't think that is odd at all.

What I find interesting is that a breed SOP can be written for a breed but nothing is accepted until jumping through a lot of hoops. Why not just write and accept an SOP and then go from there right off with attending shows and judging birds?

Theres alot wrong with doing it that way.
For one: what is in the country of origin may or may not reflect what has washed onto our shores. (this is the most important one).
2. The colors might not be stablized. Or even be possible based on a standard written with no birds in hand. Not everything is genetically possible.

I for one believe whole-heartedly in the Hoops. I sometimes wish there weren't as many. But I believe in the Hoops nonetheless.

The ABA is currently dealing with some problems that were created because there were no hoops. Everyone wants a breed listed in the SOP especially if it is named after them. You would end up with a printed Standard that would be thousand pages of useless info. There are a lot of other reasons, but the bottom line is that there has to be some order to all this. In addition a small part of the process that most people are not aware of is the COST. Every breed accepted cost the APA lots of money over the long run....much more than we collect for the qualifying fee. (printing, awards, points etc, etc.)

That goes without saying.....what post is not friendly? I haven't seen any like that in this thread....other than some aggressive posts in the first couple pages, I haven't noticed anything like that.
