Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well, Martha Steward has done it again. I came home to a note from my wife that had "French Marans dark eggs" on it. My wife wants some. Who has hatching eggs for sale? I would like Black Copper.

I'm just starting back up on selling hatching eggs for the year, so I should have a dozen available in a week or two. PM me if you want more info.

O.K. So I have a decision to make.

I bought two pair juvenile BCM from Greenfire Farm and received them just before Christmas. They arrived with sniffles and despite my best efforts have not yet recovered. They are growing well.... especially the two roos... and they are running out of room in my quarantine area. The roos have unfortanetlly begun to show white underfluff, both saddle and neck, and I do not think will be worth keeping for breeding. I am thinking I might "dispatch" the roos this weekend to give the pullets more room to hopefully make a full recovery from their snotty noses. They were all on gallimycin for about 3 wks and now tylan for the last 4 days.

What do you all think?

I think that as the cockerels grow quickly the black doesn't have time to bloom on the feathers so dispatching them before they are in full bloom may reward you with nothing... and yet they could turn out to be fine examples of the breed... Do not be hasty about dispatching young roosters... they, like fine wine, need time to age. There can be times where there is white and then it may go away. I would feed them tumeric and cranberry. I would be surprised if it DIDN'T help. Good luck dear!!!

I think next time you should make safer purchases. GFF sells "pairs" that are in my opinion way too young to be shipped, and will indeed get sick or weak in transport, so naturally there will be some problems. And for the prices I saw last time?

As for the white underfluff, if it is truly white, yeah that's a culling trait. If it truly gets towards the shaft and base of the feather itself, yes, it is a culling trait.

for your babies.

I would give them just what Geebs suggested and I would do Chickielady's bleach water hopefully it's from dust any reading you can do of Resolution's posts for caring of your birds will help you with your flock and prevent this from happening to your birds later....you can just buy cranberry sauce at the store mix it with yogurt or scrambled eggs and sprinkle the turmeric like salt and pepper be generous with it they should recover quickly

Hi guys!
I just got myself into some more marans....
I just got the 15 blue splash marans eggs to hatch today, anybody else have them or had experiance with them? I'm pretty excited to hatch them, the color is nice and size is too!
They look like gorgeous birds from the pics, so I guess in 3 weeks and a day, I should know!
