Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I had been giving them cranberries and turmeric scrambled eggs for the first few weeks, but stopped after new-years. I will go back to that, as it is cheap and easy. Not to mention they were not as sick back than.

Illa, I placed the order last spring when the prices were a bit more reasonable $75 a pair,....... but only just a bit! They have been shedding out their baby feathers and the down is just now, at about 12wks old, becoming visible as white at the shaft and base of the feathers. Kinda disappointing, but live and learn. They are nice looking roos otherwise... size and conformation wise.

marquisella, I will see if I can get some denagard and give it a try too, as I am almost at the end of my rope. I really do not want to be keeping birds this big in quarantine any-longer!

Thanks all!

Hopefully, I will post some pics of the chicks I got from Pinkchick yesterday....

Mel, the pics are great. Those 2 splash chicks are 2nd generation olive eggers from Bill crossed over one of his first generation OE dtrs. (can't wait to see those eggs

) and is that little blue one with the pink band? If so, that is Bill's kiddo from my Davis Splash girl. Can't wait to see them all grown up.
Now we need to see the younger Blue Copper baby.

x 2 . . . .

ABSOLUTELY NO WAY am I going to encourage any egg shell eating!

The egg shells do great in the compost and the garden needs calcium to avoid Fruit end rot.

I too would be afraid to give them back their egg shells. I certainly don't want them getting any ideas...................I ut all mine in the garden compost & they go right into the ground.

Umm, the idea is not to give them the egg shells just plain like that; You crush them up into small bits like calcium or grit, and mix it in their food or treats. There's little to no recognizing that they're eating their own egg shells.

But yes, I also add about 80% of all my egg shells to the garden compost.

I saw a posting about 1000 pages ago (!) on this thread about someone working on blue marans with dark chocolate eggs ... know where I can get some of these chicks? I'm working on having all blue chickens of various breeds so ... anybody?

Thanks.
