Hello and
welcome-byc.gif
!

Where are you? There may be some breeders nearby that can help you. There are also plenty breeders around the US who ship hatching eggs if you have a broody ready. I am just one of those breeders.

Hi Geri -

Where are you located? There might be a BYCer out your way. If not, you can always check out the BYC egg auctions. Many of us post eggs there when we have them. I should have some up there the week after next.

And welcome to the Marans thread, Geri, pbirdhaven, and ihvpower! We're glad to have you.

Ok I have a question Has anyone hatched an egg that had a tiny pin prick in it? One of my eggs in the incubator had a very small bubble leek out but it seam to have stopped and sealed its self up. I looked really hard at all the eggs before I put them into the incubator and did not see it. It only bubbled once and has not after that. I was wondering if there is a chance that it will hatch and if there is any danger to the other eggs if I just leave it and hope it hatches.

Well, it looks like the choice was made for me on which roo to use. I just went out to the coop and found the big one dead. It was very hot today, and he must not have been able to overcome it. Rats.

You can candle them, but the chances of you seeing much besides an air cell is pretty slim, a pretty darn high powered light is needed, but even then it can be very tricky to see in these eggs. With Marans eggs......I always set 'em and forget 'em, what hatches....hatches. I will run them past the candler on day 18 to see if I can weed out any non-fertiles or ones that just didn't do anything, but it is still very hard to see into these Marans eggs.

I pretty much set and forget on Marans eggs also! Sometimes I will candle at day 10. By then I can usually see a pretty good shadow in those that are developing. I always leave them all in until day 18 though. By day 18 you can weed out those that were not fertile or stopped developing early. I candle in my interior bathroom, no window, so it it pitch black. I use a very high powered LED flashlight. I can never see veining just the shadow. If they have developed correctly by day 18 all I can see is the air cell. If the rest of the egg is not solid black, I don't expect it to hatch.

Thanks ya'll for the back up on be patient! The boys and I don't do that very well but we're working on it...
