Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Our place sounds like a total game farm too...but not just mornings LOL. I have a pretty little blue roo who is so nasty. Like Pip, I am hoping that he will calm down if he gets girls too. A few of these girls are older than him so maybe they will kick his naughty little butt. He bit dh and drew blood tonight when he tried to lock his little group up.
I still need to think of a name for him (well I can think of a few but they're not nice

Yeh, I can't say just mornings any more either. All of a sudden, all the hormones hit at once, and they are ALL crowing in the mornings, and there are many "practice" sessions throughout the day now too. Poor Clyde and Slick are the lousiest crowers, or should I say croakers??

Clyde sounds more like a crow or raven on steroids. Fuglee, because of his deformed posture, sounds like a shreiking girl, although his cadence is good. Roy, my pride, has the perfect, deep toned crow for my ears. Pip is very close to Roy's, but he has a hilarious, wind down sound he makes after the crow, that sounds like an air raid siren winding down! I can't help but gafaw every time I here it!!

My friend thinks it's very sad, on my part, that I can distinguish which roo is who when crowing!

I tip my hat to them. That is the best group of BC's I have seen so far.

Well the thanks goes to Tannis (The Point on here) for shipping me the eggs, and Don (snowbird) whose stock she has. While they do have their faults, I am so far pleased with what I decided to keep back. I plan on breeding Pip to my color lacking girls to hopefully get some hackle color in, and then breed the progeny to Roy, to get more stockiness in the bodies and more shank feathering. Only then can I take pleasure in seeing what I did. Let's hope it goes as I see it in my mind's eye!

Debbi- sounds like you have a good plan and the start of an excellent flock from the look of your birds!

So this is what I would do - -- CRD is CHRONIC and will return. It will effect future chicks from these guys. Also, would make these guys carriers to effect the rest of your flock. . . .

So, I would make some phone calls on Monday and find a vet that would analyze a throat swab to determine exactly what they have. What ever one has the others have - - - so you only need one test done.

You have invest $ $ $ in these birds, so I would confirm what they have before I did anything.

You may want to research: tiamulin (Denagard)

Congratulations Steve! Nice egg color and cuteness all over that baby. How many did you set? And yes.....I too think this is going to be the year for Marans! Go Marans!
I have been swamped with requests for Marans lately. Since I got into Marans, I have never had so many inquiries for chicks or hatching eggs, are you seeing the same trend Steve? I have been talking with many other breeders as well and they are experiencing the same thing, it's almost like Marans have been totally rediscovered. Something is definitely going on if I have a top breeder asking me if I have any extra eggs or chicks to sell because the demand has been crazy. I will say that the ever growing popularity of these birds is a nice thing to see and the Marans deserve it. So many great and dedicated folks have worked very hard to get these birds where they are and I applaud them all on their hard work and accomplishments so that we all may enjoy them and their beautiful eggs.

Debbi~
I agree with Walt and flgarden that he will have a nice blue color upon maturity. Looks like he is already a big boy. Is that a glint of copper in his breast I see in the photo? I would love to see more pics in about 3-4 weeks.....you will be surprised at how much he may change between this age and 3 mos and at how fast.
Love the rest of the flock....that Pip is looking very proud of himself up there on the peak. He is a pretty boy and I love the size and body of that first boy.

We just set two eggs in this batch, we had some snow and bad weather so they quit laying for awhile. We started setting eggs for spring chick sales so I just mixed these in. There are a few eggs in each tray so we will have weekly hatches. I haven't really noticed an increase in interest lately but we have never had any trouble selling them. People seem to be more selective now on what birds they are looking for, there is alot of garbage out there and then you have the mix and match crowd.
