Well......I still don't know how I feel about it....but I culled an adult bird today with my bare hands for attacking me. Don't know how I came up with the will to do it, but I did (I can put down a chick and I can help butcher...I've just always had a problem doing the deed to an adult bird). I walked into the laying coop to feed and water and the 6 mos. old BCM cockerel from GFF that I still have was being mean to the Delaware babies (4 mos. old they really aren't babies), so I shut him outside for a minute or two and finished doing what I needed to do and the Del's were all settled down, so I opened the pop door and let him back in......he didn't go after the Del's this time, he came after me. WRONG!!!!!! I didn't get him the first time I tried to grab him and as soon as I went after him he went straight for my face. Good thing his toenails got stuck in my stocking cap or one of them would have went straight to my eye. I had a hold of him this time and.....I didn't let go. Literally just happened not even 30 minutes ago...I didn't think I would still be a little weirded out 30 minutes later...but I am.

Forgot to mention that this is the second time in a few days, the first time he didn't make contact like he did this time.

Jeremy~

I can't remember where I found that smiley. Sorry! But isn't it great?

Aww Kim, what a hard but necessary thing. You were kind enough to give the boy a second chance and he blew it. Doesn't make it any easier. When something like that happens here, it has, I think of my kids and their precious eyes, legs...and the deed just has to be done. Sobbed like a baby when a banty roo I loved and who respected me but took issue with everyone else had to be put down after going for my daughters face. No room in my coops for a testy Roo.

Do any of you ever just give your roosters away? I'm not talking about the mean ones.

I can clean and process a deer or a hog. I can clean fish, but for the life of me I can't do chickens.

It goes back to when I was a kid and we processed 50-100 at a time, and I had to do the dipping and plucking.

I have 4 BCM's one bantem OEGB two BJG's and a BO that I need to get rid of. I've had no takers on Craigslist, so I'm wondering if I shouldn't just advertize them as free. Hubby has said he would butcher them, but he never does so giving them away makes more sense than feeding them forever. I'm afraid with spring in the air their hormonal level is going to make them start fighting more and I'm going to end up with a bunch of beat up roosters.

Any other ideas?

Give the hubby a "do date". Say something like, "Dear, do you think you will be able to take care of those chickens this weekend?" and then on Friday remind him with a "Do you want to do those chickens on Saturday or Sunday?" if he says Sunday then when he gets up on Sunday morning you greet him with "Today is the day!"
I'm guessing this will work on other people, it always worked when my ex did it to me!

Mel, you're too easy. That doesn't work with my hubby.

I think it's an age thing. You know... gotta go put wood in the stove. Oh, one of the goats are out. Starts to put the goat back...leaves the gate open...more goats out. Better put some feed in there for them. Okay, now feed the dogs. What are the dogs barking at? Take a walk over the hill. OH LOOK AT THE DEER. Watch deer for a while. Come back in the house and get something to eat. Let's see... what did he go out to do in the first place?

It's almost like ADD (attention deficit disorder)

Question: How many kids with ADD does it take to change a light bulb.

Answer: Wanna go ride bikes?

Oh Kim, so sorry to hear that! It does make "the deed" easier though when they are mean to you. My Fuglee only tried it the one time until I cought him and carried him around humiliating him for a bit. My mean one now is Pip! Although he's never flown at my face, he gets that stomping, side-stepping dance going, then charges my legs. Luckily, well at least in this case, I walk with a cane, and the last time he tried it, he got whacked pretty good! I though for sure I had killed him, but he got up and ran. He thinks twice about it now, and generally waits till I leave the run to show his bravado. The two dark brothers are all taking this in, and while they have never tried anything, I just assume it will be a matter of time, so I am constantly ready for it. Some mornings, it feels like; "yea, though I walk through the valley of death"...

Never have skinned a chicken before. Plucked quite a few, and like Ivy said

, hard to do now. Mr. Pip may quickly make me change my mind though...

As for getting rid of roos, I just place an ad for them for free. Got rid of one not too long ago. Told them he was a cull, and that while he'd never attacked me, he was now hormonally in that frame of mind, so watch him. What is it with these boys???

YEAHHHHH!! Got a call from an Army rep last night. My Son is in Germany, and will be back in the USA on Sunday!!

I won't get to see him for a bit, but at least I know he will be safely back in this country! Thank you Lord!!!!!!!!!!!!
