THose dark eggs, good news & bad news....

The darkest egg developed, but didn't pip. It look very wet. Which is strange because I hardly put any water in the incubator. I usually dry incubate, but I did put water in a few times because got nervous about it...kicking myself....''The good news is I have more in the incubator and will not add water, ever.....until they go into the hatcher.

The next to darkest egg, wasn't fertile, or just didn't develop. It could be the cold, but if its fertility, how do you get a hen to let the roo breed her? I'm not into artificial insemination. Now that I know which hen she is and have her separated, should I put her by herself with the roo for a few days? Any advice is welcomed...

If you can separate her with the roo you want to use that might work. We currently have a hen that is older than the roo and the roo was unsure of her but got the hang of it so to speak after being crated together. We did hatch out 1 chick from that pair so far and have 5 more eggs currently in the incubator. Seems like extra time was needed with that hen. Good Luck

Sue, If the male and female are heavy feathered trim both around the vent. On the male trim sides and below the vent, female trim sides and above the vent. Usually about 1/2" will do the job. Don

At our local fair - - I saw birds with bad cases of scaly leg mites right BESIDE The grand champion of the poultry. . . . I did find a person to report that . . . If the grand champ had been mine, I would of been really po'ed to bring home a case of scaly leg mites

There is absolutely no way that a judge should not of noticed it. . . . Every bird from this exhibitor had issues. . . Clearly we went after judging because the ribbons had already been awarded.

I remember at Belvidere, the judge dq'd a rooster saying it had Coryza. I think generally, that the judge doens't feel its their responsability to pass judgement on birds health. But if you think about it, judges handle all the birds, and can easily pass diseases from one to another on his hands. That is why I'm pro-active about it. I think most breeders, put vasoline on their birds legs & feet, so that might prevent mites for spreading....don't know for sure.

After reading all these

(excellent & informative) posts about the potential for disease transmission

at poultry shows & fairs, I'm thinking that if I ever do exhibit any birds I would quarantine them after I got them back home before I just turned them back out with my flock.
