can't beat Vermont for ice cream.... can anyone say Ben & Jerry's!

Yea, but even Wisconsin can't beat a baby loaf of Tillamook Cheddar. I love my Marans...Cuckoos, not so much as they are hatchery birds...but the ones I've been getting from Pink...they are the start of a whole new program. (new pics soon)

Cold and nasty winter here in Maine as well but the Lobsters don't seem to mind

I asked Kim in a post earlier about se xing chicks by their noises, but wanted to see if anyone else ever does that? I grew up doing this, its not a 100%, but for the most part is pretty accurate. To do this we would pick up the chicks and the ones that make a trilling noise were the cockerels. It doesn't seem to matter what breed it is either. Always did this as a preliminary estimate and had good luck with it. I don't know of anyone else that does...but the Marans have a pretty good voice for checking when picked up...hehe...

Also, does anyone know what went into the development of silver salmon and the blue silver salmon in the Marans. I've got a project I'm working on and an wanting to double check a couple of things before I set my breeding pens up for the season.

Now....I don't notice the noises they make, I do hear them trill and talk to each other but have never paid attention to who does it more. Interesting and I will try to listen more closely to them.
As for the Silver Salmons...I'm not sure. I'll try to find out. I just want 'em..I'll work the rest of it out after I get some.

WOW I love this info...what age do the chicks have to be

Well...where its not really an exact science its just something I listen for the first one to do...and when I hear that...I will pick each one up individually and just jot a note down for them on my hatching records...and then check every week or couple weeks as the fancy strikes me haha...I just make sure that I keep notes for each new breed I'm' working with so I can see if it accurate or not. I raise bantam Wyandottes too and the bantams seem to take a little longer for it to kick in on them than it has with the Marans. I have some chicks that are two weeks old today...and if I'm remembering right without jumping up to go look at my log on the incubator...I think it was about day 8 I did my first check.
every once and a while, one will trick me...but not too often...once you hear what the trilling noise sounds like, you really are able to dial in on those little roos...little stinkers...

I just had an after thought to add...I always watch for any other signs of gender identification to back up the log I'm making...and I will jot them down alongside my 'noise' notes. This helps me be able to find patterns to identify in certain bloodlines and etc. Like I have one bloodline that the cockerels combs come in very quickly, and another that takes more time...but I just make those notes so I can go back and look at them for reference. Its been handy for me to have and is pretty easy to do, since I'm always playing with them anyways hahah

now that's a new one I haven't heard of...but it sounds like it would make a bit of sense...my male chicks do seem more apt to wiggle when I pick them normally...hmm....
I love old wives tale type stuff...some of them are pretty handy

haha...no worries...I bet that is exciting to have unlimited status...It doesn't take long to fill it seems

I don't know where my family got the 'cockerel pick up test' from, but when I asked my dad about it, he said he remembers his grandpa teaching him that...and grew up always listening for it, so I in turn grew up doing the same thing. I got to thinking about it since I did my test the other day and of course...its a landslide of little cockerels as far as I can tell so far. I think I might have a handful of girls from this first hatch...if I'm lucky haha

I've had a hard time finding much info on the silver salmon or blue silver salmon genetics in any breed that has it....I'm still looking, but just thought maybe you might know more since they are on your wish list too. If I find anything I'll be sure to pass it on to you...for future reference...and if I get some good genetics going I'll be sure to post pics and such too for you to critique.

The French Marans Club Australia site states that the Silver Salmon can be reproduced using gold Salmon crossed with Black Birchen (silver black). The silver salmon is aka as a silver duckwing coloration and a blue silver-Salmon as a Blue duckwing coloration. You will be able to make better sense of this that I can LOL! Scroll way down to Silver Salmon
