Just did round two of collecting chicks out of the hatching tray and am up to 29 chicks! Its like splash party central over here! I'm loving the big beefy silvery babies! This so far is the best hatch I've ever had on shipped eggs! I have several of my own hatching including two blue cuckoos...I'm in love with every last one of them!

We've started planting trees when we 1st moved out to our place 4 years ago- we have 2 cherry, 1 pear, 4 apple trees, plus blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and a type of blackberry that has a solid berry- the 2 cherry trees had 3 cherries on them last year. The kids enjoy watching and picking the fruit. We didn't have luck with the concord grape plant

We also tap our silver maple trees and make Maple syrup with the kids.

Last year my two sisters and I got together for a "sister's weekend." We made about 90 some jars of jelly of various kinds. We made a lot of sandplum jelly, which is one of my favorites. All the pulp from the fruit went to the chickens. They gobbled it up. My marans were only about 6 months old then. I had LOTS of sandplum seeds, which are about 3/8 inch in diameter. They ate a lot of them, but not all of them. I'm sure it was just too many. I'm hoping as my trees mature that any fruit deemed "non-human consumption' can be enjoyed by the chickens and the goats. I just pray my hubby's goats don't get out and eat my trees!

Susie, I kow what you mean. My very first goats out here kept getting out & ate my Eureka Lemon tree done to nothing but a fuzzy small stick trunk more than once anyway. It did finally grow back & after many years of growth but no fruit we yanked it out & put in a Naval Orange. When the lemon tree was laying there on the ground after we cut it down.......then I found fruit in it hidden way inside.....LOL. We have a family garden of fruit trees of about every type I could grab including persimmons & Loquats. There are still some wierd ones I would like to give a try but alas I am getting old......LOL

My eggs were splash and blue Marans and black Ameraucanas from Helen Byers in Texas. I'll take some pics later this afternoon after they get some rest and have a meal. They are super chunky healthy fluffy butts. Some of Helen's splash girls lay some nice dark eggs too, which makes it even more exciting opening the incubator to see what's waiting for me.

Mine are from crfarms from here on the forum. BBS she is getting mostly splash she said and her line has no copper so the blues and blacks should be solid. Then I have a great array from Pink getting very very excited to see what we get!
