Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

mathace"lisa" if you ask walt for permission to copy the pages I will send you my Sop 2001 for you to copy the front of book for your thread. You can keep the book as I am getting a new one. Don

Permission may not be required but would be nice. I have seen the drawings in real old poultry books from the 20's. Don

Oh that's crazy! I have a dozen showgirl eggs in a crappy LG that I've been popping on top of my eggs in a full hova genesis. I unplug the turner when I do that- can you really keep the turner on with eggs on top of eachother? I'm new to the whole turner thing, and not crazy about how many fewer eggs I can fit, but it's easy....

Anyway- here's some pics of my youngsters. I also have some of Gary Ramey's BC Marans going on lockdown tomorrow. Haven't really been able to see in them so I hope they're good- LOL!

It is a little nuts... I got the idea from others here on BYC. What I have to do is put little pieces of rolled up bubble wrap carefully placed to pad the eggs so that they do not roll... Doesn't take much. Other people have used rolled up wads of wax paper... I couldn't bare to eliminate the extras - they all deserve a chance. I candled last night and I think I have at least 3 so far that won't make it to lockdown so that will make some room...

Nice pics! Love the name Super Freak! Is he really 'Super Freaky' Is that some 'extra comb' or something on the back of his head, or just a wierd picture?

Ha- no that's a dog food bowl behind him. He's freaky because he's more copper than blue. I just hatched a wheaten ameraucana x salmon faverolle and her name is Super Cheeks. I hope everybody walks around singing Super Freak all day now.

How in the world do you guys candle these Marans eggs. I've tried and tried since last year and never can see anything. I have a candler that I bought when I bought my Genesis that works great on my other eggs. I posted asking for advice and was told to use an LED flashlight, so I also have used my husband's really strong LED flashlight. It also works great on my other eggs, but not these marans. With this incubation one of my marans eggs was a little lighter than the other ones and I think I saw an air sac on that one, but that was it and on day 7 only. Since then I can't see anything on any of them.

I couldn't see through my olive eggs either- using a 12 bulb LED. I just left them in and luckily they all hatched! I don't know if I could stand that with a whole bator full of shipped eggs though- you KNOW some of them are likely clear after shipping across the country. Yeah- frustrating.

I use a small but very powerful "tactical" flashlight. I could candle all my marans eggs, 6,7 and 8 on the marans' scale. I had to go into a totally dark room, and make a little round thing for the egg to sit on and the flashlight to shine into so the light wouldn't leak around the edge of the egg.

Hi

I suppose someone might cheat but the egg color is the same now in the black copper, wheaten, blue wheaten, copper blue, blue, black, birchen, silver and gold duckwing. There would be little gain in cheating.
