Do you have some eggs coming from Pink or some in the bator? I'm not sure if it's the way they were packaged or handled by the USPS, but I read so much about the bad hatch rates on shipped eggs. These went all the way across the country in cold weather. So far of the 24 out of 29 that made it to lockdown, 14 have hatched and last I looked their are more on the way... Plus, go have a look at the pics I posted on the Welsummer thread. Of the 6 of those I hatched, I believe they might all be girls

Pink, praying for you

Ivy, I feel for you. My beagle/JR has gotten sprayed 3 times this week! At least he is small and easy to give a bath to. Do you know the peroxide, dish soap, baking soda trick? I use it on my 70 lb Collie, who thank God is much smarter than the little guy and only gets sprayed once each year.

I have 2 chicks that just hatched and 2 more pipped in a batch that I cooked to 111 degrees overnight at day 12. Can't believe that some survived!

I just candled my eggs. . . . Pink sent me some about 2 weeks ago and the post office decided to play kickball with the box. Pink did an excellent job of packing them . . . . one had a hair line crack because of the rough handling.

HOWEVER, that the post office deserves a penality for "Unnecessary Roughness" that the eggs suffered. I have lost 9 of the 15 eggs to the rough handling during shipment

. Sitting right beside Pink's 15 marans eggs are 15 shipped speckled sussex eggs. The speckled sussex eggs candled great - - - all are going into lockdown. This is the way with shipped eggs - - - it is beyond the shipper or receivers ability to control what the post office people do

I only have 6 of pinks eggs that will go into lockdown next week

I just received 11 LIVE shipped speckled sussex chicks. . . The box was dented on two sides. They were sent EXPRESS mail.. . . REALLY, they couldn't hear the little chirps inside ? ? ? REALLY, the air holes weren't a clue to be gentle ? ? ?

i just got 2 young marans pullets hey are hang out together all day in the pen. when i lift them up to put them thur the coop door for the night. they hide on floor under the nesting boxes so i pick them up and put them on the roost and they seem they will be a talk back chickens Is the normal for thee birds to be very vocal?

Young pullets are funny I took some from a pen that they roosted just fine in moved them out to the grass with their own house every night for a week I had to go get them out of a corner put them in the house and one of them thought we were trying to kill her every night...vocal girl I'm surprised the neighbor didn't think we were killing chickens..in the daytime she comes up for treats and is the friendliest one thank goodness they figured out to go to bed I thought that I wouldn't have to go thru putting them to bed they are at point of lay....so I would say it's normal for something new maybe she'll quiet down my Marans are not as noisy as my Delawares

I named some of my Delawares - - - BLONDIE and MS NICKS because they are vocal!

Picture Blondie singing

"Call ME Call ME". Now, picture the voice overlay of the delaware pullets squawking . . . VERY APPROPRIATE!

HOWEVER, the roos are quieter with the Delawares than the Marans (IMHO

Our post office is the worst!!! Not sure if we have the same one but ours is really bad. One time I had ordered 2 doz eggs and the mail lady hands me the box (fragile written all over it btw) and it is actually oozing eggs !! Totally smashed up carton. Then she says, "you know you can have it put on the label to have us call you and add your phone number and you can go pick them up at the Post Office". I point to the label which says exactly that, and she is like "Oh" and leaves. I always have that written on the lable and they never have called me ONCE! LOL

Not to mention that they "lost" a very expensive camera dh ordered last year somewhere between the post office when it was scanned into thier PO and our house!!! I had to file a police report and report them to the post master. They still act like it wasn't thier fault but somehow we all of a sudden got a new mail carrier HMMMMMM......

Well so far all my Olive eggers have hatched but 3. I only have one OE hen that lays so some of the 11 OE eggs obviously were over a week old before setting. They might still hatch though. I had 2 blue copper eggs in there and both of them hatched. Only one of the birchen eggs hatched. Looks like it is a blue chick. Clean legged (which I knew). I guess I will have to take a chance on shipped eggs again if the rest of these birchens don't hatch lol. I couldn't have any worse luck!

Mornin' everyone!

flgardengirl ~ Nice to see you, you've been gone awhile! Hope the rest of your Birchens hatch for you

SPRING ARRIVES TOMORROW AFTERNOON!!!!!

Bought a huge wheelbarrow yesterday, so coop clean-out will commence today! Not sure I like the "deep litter" method, there's LOTS to clean out!
