So is the new avatar from your own house situation ? ? ?

Yes sadly, it's not posted any longer as it's all cleaned out and the house is gutted, but it's just a sign-of-the-times in my current world

I am new to chickens. I have 15 chicks that are suppose to be from the Grisham line. Is anyone familiar with that line? I am hoping to get 6 hens and a Roos out of this. How old do the chicks need to be before you can tell them apart? And at what age would you start culling? They are 14 days old now.

I have fallen in love with the chocolatey brown egg of this breed and have been looking for a couple hens locally but no luck yet. I don't really want to do the chick thing because but will do what i have to do because the wait until that first egg would be worth it!

Holy cow! New Marans folks are popping out of the woodwork this morning!

Batty ~ You didn't say where "locally" was. You may have someone in here right down the road from you!

Then there are always chicks or hatching eggs, and yes, the wait for that first egg is EXASPERATING!!!

...but well worth it!

With some lines the large and red combs start showing up between 2 - 3 weeks old. With other lines, it takes longer.

Culling - - - if you are culling for show quality, you will not be able to do very much for about 5 months.

By 8 weeks, you can cull based on
1.) Is there leg feathering?
2.) Is there toe feathering on outside toe only?
3.) Is there any side sprigs on the comb ?
4.) Is there a spilt comb?
5.) Is there a lot of coppering in the chest of the cockerels?
6.) Leg color and toe color

By 16 weeks, you can cull based on
1.) Excessive coppering on chest
2.) Roach Back
3.) Nasty, NASTY, Attitudes

By 6 months, you can cull
1.) Tail angle
2.) Feather Color
3.) Body shape
4.) Egg Color with hens ( you want to wait a month after they start laying before making any decisions)
5.) Eye color
5.) Mossiness . . .
6.) Feather shafting

At 6 months . .. Body is not done filling in yet. A cockerel will do MORE growing between 6 months and 1 year.
Color - - - Some color changes will still happen After the 6 month period. However, if you are going to cull for WHITE feathers. . . I would wait until the 5 or 6 month mark BEFORE culling for this.

This is what I do . . . Others here may do it sooner or later . .
