With some lines the large and red combs start showing up between 2 - 3 weeks old. With other lines, it takes longer.
Culling - - - if you are culling for show quality, you will not be able to do very much for about 5 months.
By 8 weeks, you can cull based on
1.) Is there leg feathering?
2.) Is there toe feathering on outside toe only?
3.) Is there any side sprigs on the comb ?
4.) Is there a spilt comb?
5.) Is there a lot of coppering in the chest of the cockerels?
6.) Leg color and toe color
By 16 weeks, you can cull based on
1.) Excessive coppering on chest
2.) Roach Back
3.) Nasty, NASTY, Attitudes
By 6 months, you can cull
1.) Tail angle
2.) Feather Color
3.) Body shape
4.) Egg Color with hens ( you want to wait a month after they start laying before making any decisions)
5.) Eye color
5.) Mossiness . . .
6.) Feather shafting
At 6 months . .. Body is not done filling in yet. A cockerel will do MORE growing between 6 months and 1 year.
Color - - - Some color changes will still happen After the 6 month period. However, if you are going to cull for WHITE feathers. . . I would wait until the 5 or 6 month mark BEFORE culling for this.
This is what I do . . . Others here may do it sooner or later . .
