I was thinking maybe someone here could answer a quick question from a newbie...
I'm thinking about buying some Welsummer and Cuckoo Maran chicks today, because I heard they can make sex links...I'm just starting to learn about chicken breeding, it's a lot more complicated than I thought...but my question is, if I breed Sex linked chicks, are they good for anything besides sexing them? Do people want to buy sex links because they can be sure about the gender? Or are they good birds in general? Do sex links sell well? Would I be better off doing just Wellies or Marans?
I desperately want these Orps to hatch, part of my *grand* plan
But at least we have some fuzzy butts running around in the 'bator at the moment, Marans.
Now y'all are gonna laff at me but I've gotten addicted to buying fertile eggs, not only Marans but obviously, the Orps as well but I do not have anything else *for hatching* purchased from others. I do have my Midget Whites due soon (turkeys) but I will be incubating my own Narangansett eggs soon. But of the eggs I purchased, my boyfriend who handles the incubators (in the small house near the barn where he lives), didn't fully mark what the eggs were or which breeder they came from and of course, neither did I! So now we are having some surprise hatches!!
Once they are born of course, I will be able to match them up. I'm bad! So no more egg buying for me until all these eggs hatch or not!
I dont know much about Cuckoo's but I do know that the leg coloring will be different when compared to your BR's. BR's have yellow legs and Cuckoo's will have pinkish legs.

I've got pics when they were 19 days ( almost 3 weeks old) and then pics again when they are 1 month old ( 4 weeks). There is a huge change in that 7 - 10 day period. Let me give you an example. . . .
To answer your other questions - -- YES, there can be a huge difference between the lines. However, pink and I are both Davis based. Hers are purer than mine, but Davis none the less. Her line has a "big comb / wattle" characteristic. Some suspect it is because they are FLORIDA raised and develop the large comb / wattles to deal with the HEAT
