Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Morning Pink,
My babies are 3 weeks today -
Reminder:
4 Black Copper
3 Blue Copper
2 Splash

I'm still trying to figure out who will be roo - There has been some comb development more on some than others, but not a lot. When should they be getting more prominent and pink?
I saw some pics, I believe were 'mathace' at 4 weeks, and the roos were very evident - red combs and wattles! Will I see that much of a change in one week? Can batches/lines vary this much? or is it possible I have lots of pullets?(which I doubt

Congrats on your hatch!

Thanks,
Steve

And I need to change the Black Copper count to 3 and 3 Splash and the rest are Blue Coppers.

the Blues! Too bad I'm not keeping any of them.

Steve.....betting the ones that show more comb development are the boys. If they were in my brooder I could tell you lickity split but since that is not the case I will need photos. Can you post photos of only the ones that you believe are cockerels?

Thanks for the pics of Gnarles' legs. One of mine, a cockerel, must be from one of your GF BCMs, cause he has the "street sweeper" look! He WILL be MY "G Jr."

I guess my question is based on what I saw of 'mathace's' month old cockerel pics on the other thread... They have very distinct comb and wattle development - lots of red color as well... Can that happen in a weeks time?

Mine are only 3 weeks but at this rate are going to look more like this unless some drastic changes occur in the next week

... I have some Barnies due to hatch next weekend as well...

Thanks Debbi!

4 weeks already?!?!?!?! WoW! Crazy! I feel like I haven't been around much lately and am all detached from everyone's hatches and how the kiddos are progressing. I try to buzz by during the day, but catching up on my cell phone is more of a hassle than it is worth and very limiting.

I do hope you have a Gnarles Jr., funny, but just after I typed Gnarles Jr. all I can think about now is a Carl's Jr. burger for lunch.

Did you end up with any Bill kiddos? I know one hatched but that one is the one that didn't do so well right?

I had two Bill chicks hatch. The first one was the one with what I saw as a hernia, but it absorbed. That one is still here, and is a big pullet! It was the one with the wild-type pattern on her head! The other that hatched but didn't make it was a Splash.

I need a Splash or two here, even a roo. Did I just say I need another roo??????

Yes...it can happen that fast. It is like all of a sudden they will scream cockerel and by about 3-4 weeks of age.

Steve,

I'll try to get some pics today when the sun comes out. Still pretty cloudy and dark here right now. And yes, seems like once they hit 3-4 weeks, the changes by the week get more dramatic, at least here they do!
