I just got off the phone with the superintendant for the puyallup fair and she said that we can show our marans there! So I may enter at least the cockeral. The hen has naked legs...so I probably shouldnt enter her.

Just thought that I would share some random photos of a some of my birds that were culls and now live in the laying flock and a rooster that was a cull.

This is Phat Sassy.....and she lives up to her name. She is from a Black Copper mother and my dark Blue Copper roo Bill. Sass shows no signs what so ever of copper but has great type IMO and is destined for the Lavender AM pen as I was lucky enough to get a single combed roo with very little cheek fluff and I am going to mess around with the Lav color with her. Just a fun little experiment. Sorry about the quality of the photo's she is a stinker and full of sass. She just never stands still. She is a big girl.

Just for fun......this is Bill, my co-dependent roo the one I must run and hide from and I just noticed that he has finally got some copper in his shoulders. WoW! News to me! He is a year and a half or so in age. His background is unknown, no idea what lines he came from. I use him for making Olive Eggers. He had a magnificent comb with 5 points until one of the layers got a hold of him and he has great eye color. He makes beautiful blues and splashes for the laying flock.

This was Junior, Junior was a product of Bill and a Black Copper mother. He was a good bird but too little copper and too much green sheen. He was the guest of honor at a BBQ not too long ago. I agonized over this decision for sometime because of his type but I think I made the right decision. He was 7 mos old.

I will try to get some photos of Bill's blue and splash daughters that were products from experimenting with Bill and some culled Marans from previous hatches.

Bev: I believe I have narrowed it down to the only possibilities on the parentage... I talked to jenks and we thought it out... Please add your thoughts...

There could be a melanised bird that covers either a split or birchen... Most likely a split as it hasn't show up... Of the roosters there is only one I feel that could stamp himself in this fashion... Longer back, short legs etc... That would be Charles... The other rooster is much more upright and bigger... So I am going to do a test mating/hatching and see if I cannot make it rear it's head again.... If what you are saying is correct about the hackle color... Charles is my lightest... He is the only possible rooster as the other one had too much mahogany and melaniser... It would have made her red... (correct me if I am wrong here). It will take me a little while to get the data on this.... Next spring likely but I will keep you posted.. If you find out more as you have bred this color before... Please let me know... This was a suprise. I did not breed this hen for next years female for myself so it should be gone with this hen. here is a pitiful picture (she wouldn't hold still at all...Flighty bird like the birchen).

I guess this is one more Aye for the argument about culling heavily and never hatching the cull pen!!! ha ha...

You can't find it because there is only a proposed standard at this time. Marans haven't been accepted by the APA yet, many are working very diligently on it. The more shown the better IMO. Yes the proposed standard calls for feathered shanks, so I would not take the pullet that is clean legged.

I will see if I can find the proposed standard and get it to you.

chasehope-- I entered my BCMarans and was DQ'd for "stubs" When I asked about it I was told that they were judged by the American standard and not the European standard.

??????

There isn't an American Standard yet, right??? Because they haven't been accepted?? So can someone explain this to me. It just doesn't make sense.

I couldn't ask the actual Judge because they judged the birds a day earlier than posted in the Fair Book. Judged them 1 minute after the birds were brought in. No kidding. Birds were to be in from 7-11 and they judged them at 11.
