This is my year too...I hope. Sun is shining here today too, so the babies can go back outside!!

They are ticked off they could not go out for the last couple of days, and JR. busted out of the brooder cage!

Good thing I listen to the sounds the chicks make, as I kept hearing a distress call. Walked out there and there he was, standing in the middle of the room!

Thank God I lnow the call and the dogs don't!!! JR was more than happy to be saved and put back, but with the weather fianally breaking, I think it's time to go outside for good!

Good morning, I have some questions for everyone.
How long do you hold on to a chicken before you cull based on color and body type?

Will the roo develop more color as he ages and do you wait for the first molt to have a better idea of what he'll look like?

I also noticed that some have a dark eye color when they're younger, at what age should you cull based on dark eyes?

Will a pullet outgrow the mossyness and how long does it take to determine if it will go away?

Is there such a thing as the perfect line? It seems that every line has problems with something. I'm not an expert but I've been reading enough about FBCM to find a fault with every bird I've seen. Is this normal in the chicken showing world?

Thanks Debbi! I wish you all the luck and strength that is needed to stop smoking. It takes tons of will power. Sister if you need a shoulder or a friend you just holler. One morning we woke up and said.....ENUFF and that was that. You know what??? Everything tastes better now!

Glad the chickies are doing good. My little Blue Bill Jr. is quite the escape artist as well. He is now back in the grow out pen with some younger birds because he just won't stay put in the pen he is suppose to be in. Stinker! Everyday I would go down to feed and water and collect eggs the bugger would be running around in the pasture. DUMB!!!!!!!!! He is lucky my dog didn't eat him. My Lillie likes young chickens..she won't eat the big ones but if smaller or younger on is out....she thinks it's fair game. He doesn't know how lucky he is. On the other hand I was hoping that he would have correct eye color like his daddy but he has his mothers darker eye color. Bummer!
I noticed some very nice copper coming in on his hackles and his wing bow the other day when he was hanging out with my tucked under my arm just for fun. I know they love me when I do this.

Here are a couple not so good photos of him. I will get better ones someday.

I've found here that you get a real good idea of what the color/type is going to end up being by about 8 months. After the adult molt, you may see a bit more color, but I would not think anything too drastically different. Type, the roos will keep filling in body wise until a year and a half. Mossiness can go away, depending on how much there is. If it's quite a bit, even after the juvie molt, then there's a good chance it's there to stay.

Eye color here is usually a greenish/gray color when young, then by about 4 months, they have the proper eye color, some stragglers may take a little longer.

There is NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT BIRD! I don't care whose line you have, it ain't happening. All you can do is try to get the best you can, and try to improve with each generation.
