Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I usually try and be very blunt when bringing out a fault with someone else's fowl on the forum. I have had all of these faults and will try and breed fowl that do not have them. I am raising large numbers and culling everything that has a fault. In the future each generation should have less faults or I will drop the Marans from my fowl. If I had of known about all the faults would not have got involved with them. If you can not cull the Marans best to get another breed.

This is directed at no one but myself.

Hi Don

Yes, the birds will be judged on the standard that has been approved by the standards committee and the APA committee. Had the other club started their club earlier than they did, showed the number of birds required so that they could apply for the qualifying meet then it would be their standard that would have been accepted. At the time I started all this there was no one trying to get the birds accepted.

Bev

Bev, I myself applaud all the work , Money and time you and your group have put into this effort. I will be glad when it is over and we know what is down in writing, don't be suprised if there are changes made with the final draft as there usually are.

Hi

We haven't had a visit that I know of for over week but did find a hole that had been dug under the fence, a trap was placed over the hole.

I didn't get a picture sent to me but I have a young male and will post pictures of him when he is a little bigger. I have done most of my breeding now and the older birds are in moult. As soon as I have something to show you I will, just the wrong time of year for me at the moment.

Don as I have said, Im new to marans and am searching for knowledge ...dont eat your young....it is not what you said....it is how it was put forth. Ive been called brusque and brutally honest before too so I know when it is too much! It would be helpful to my medical/scientific mind if some references to the genetic waddle problem was supplied as I could not find it on my brief BYC search...husband finally home and dinner prep occurring.

Thank you Bev,

Do you know why then that my Marans were DQ'd for having feathered shanks? If the proposed American Standard is as close to the French Standard as you could get, then wouldn't they need to have feathered shanks? These were your birds I was showing Bev and I know they meet the requirements!

Hi

The judges don't know what the standard is, that is why it's a good thing to take the standard along with you and hand it to the judge.

Bev

I really had no idea that the Judge wouldn't know these facts. Even if I had realized, the Fair goofed and the birds were judged a day earlier than it was posted that they would.
I brought them all in on Wednesday between 7-11 (the last at 11 because I forgot one and had to run back home to get her) Then without my realizing it they judged those same birds at 11 on Wednesday. I was probably there when it was going on.
If I had I would have asked the judge myself if I was given the chance.

O.K.- I'm going to jump in here and change the topic (probably needs changing right about now).

I posted a picture of this bird a while back and jokingly called it my favorite Marans. Bev saw the picture and wrote to ask me about this beautiful "Birchen" which apparently carries BOTH the silver and the gold gene (go figure). Since I know less than nothing about genetics - is it possible that this "Birchen" came from my BCMs? I thought he was one of my "mutts" from my Olive Egger project but other than that, I would have no other "source" for his existence. I even thought he might be from one of the "rare breeds" I get when I order the assorted box of hatching eggs from SCBirdfarm but I don't think they have this "breed" (if that's what he is).

Any help would be appreciated. And.....can he be used in any breeding program and if so, for what? He really is quite handsome and does have feathered shafts.

Rustyswoman,

Good, I sure hope it is being addressed, I think it is a lot of the problem. That said, are only the Black Coppers being admitted for the proposed standard at this time, or are other varieties as well? I've also been confused by the different web sites touting to be "The One" as far as approval goes. I think the two (at least) need to band together to get to the eventual goal. Before I plop down my hard earned bucks, I want to know who the "parent or host" club is going to be representing the APA with this breed. Like I said before, new to the chicken thing, but not to the politics of clubs..

Debbi, the group MCC that Bev Davis is president of is the official Host club to the APA as they are the club that has done all the leg work and spent the money to get this thing to where it is at present.

The Black Copper is the only veriety attempting to be recognized at present. The Wheaten will go for accepting at Indy in 2011.

Should also say that I do not belong to either club, as I was kicked out of both.

Hi

If you should show your bird and send in the standard when submitting your entrance fee you would be helping a lot, it would be one more judge that would be aware of the standard. Everyone can help in this way to promote the Marans breed. This group is a very good one, you are all educating each other. If you started showing it would so much more interesting for you all. Don can tell you all how to present your birds for showing. I never thought I would enjoy chicken shows but I do.
