Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

You got that right Kim, I love saurkraut so much I could eat it out of the can!

Will try to get pics of the chick in question. The two definate BCM girls, are such a lovely, soft, deep black color. Olivia is so black she looks like a crow at this age!

This black is very different than what I am used to seeing, can't explain it. Very powdery soft, yet deep color, I love it! Myrtle, the chick in question will be a Bill blue if she is indeed blue. Pip seems to be telling the chicks to "run! you don't need to go in the coop yet!" at night time. The little snot!

Since we've had these storms, it's pretty much catch as catch can as far as getting a break from the lightning and rain. That means, they may have to be put in the coop a tad earlier, and Pip ain't having any of that! Not a problem with him, he can stay out in the rain if he wants to, and he has for the last 2 nights!

My Seramas have a nest with 12 eggs but none of the hens have started sitting on them. Is it likely that they will not sit on them at all and if so should I take them and put them in the incubator? I have four hens all about a year old.

Kim and Debbie are right, there is nothing better then saurkraut, my son has been after me to make the homemade again and its so easy
It goes with anything but the best is spareribs,
So Mel get your cabbage growing

Be careful, it might be the calm before the storm. I see where Crater Lake in Oregon has had 615 inches of snow so far this year and it is presently snowing hard there now.

Eek! I sure hope its not the calm before the storm. Its been crappy all spring...not really been spring at all. So I'm gonna just keep hoping that its going to actually be the beginning of it now so I can get things in the ground and get my chicks out in their homes outside instead of in the garage. The winds have been so bad I worry the wee ones will freeze to death.

That's a crap load of snow at crater lake! I would never ever want to see that much snow!

Does anybody know who has the salmon marans in GA?
http://www.bidbirdauctions.com/listings/details/index.cfm?itemnum=988510460

I have tried to contact these people for pics of thier hens and never got a response. Also- I'm kinda leary about bidding on 6 week old chicks (we've gotten all roos with birds that age before) but I am really interested in maybe getting some eggs, or younger chicks that haven't been picked through.

I haven't been through the whole thread- there is just way too much here- so sorry if they have been discussed. Thanks!

I'm delighted to be joining the backyard BCM club - I hatched 7 Black/Blue Copper Marans last weekend - and I even got one with feathered legs (and another with feathered ankles, too cute!)

Looking forward to LOADS of dark eggs - and olive eggers in the future.

Well, I lucked out and got a couple of decent pics of Myrtle. Looking at the pics, I see pullet. Funny how when I see her running around in person, she sometimes looks roo.

See the fluff and lacing on the breast?

Then the group shot, less Olivia, she hates the camera! On left is Billie. Got any Black Birchens in there Kim?? She has such a light colored head! In the back left is light blue Charlotte. I love her, she is very pretty, and her dark eyes are starting to lighten! Then there is Myrtle in the middle. Note the lacing on the breast. On the right is blue JR. He's just starting to get some copper in the hackles! They will be 7 weeks on Saturday.

When I saw you reference this book even earlier in the thread I did a search on it and couldn't find any copies for sale. Amazon doesn't have any in stock and no other options came up. Do you know where I can find a copy? Thanks.

Hi, I bought my copy from abebooks and after bought the other books he had out. Don
