Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey Marans experts. I have 5 chicks all about 5-6 weeks old. Some are starting to look different than the others. Trying to ID roos vs. pullets. Thoughts?

Pullet wing feathers.

Here are some photos of my dark blue copper Bill boy. He is just starting to get copper at 4 mos. old and his eye color is just starting to change. No he doesn't have any white feathers...somehow he got into some peepooh and it was all over his front...or he was on the bottom perch.

He also has copper coming in on the saddle area.

And let me say the last photo was taken with flash and made his undercolor look white but I assure you all that his undercolor is blue.

Hopefully on Sunday when it is a little nicer outside I can get some of him out on the grass.

Dang....the photos are okay from my end before I post them but once I post them they don't look the same to me. To me, after these posted they make him look very dark without showing the vibrant copper color coming in on his hackles. Does it look the same to you all?

Okay this question is for Don. I have seen you mentioning the white uncolor being undesireable in the BC and I think in the wheaton. Is this a trait we want to avoid in the blues as well? Also in a BC crossing to Blue to make the copper in the blue bird one of the byproduct birds (black) would be a cull?

By the way PINK>>>> HI! and NICE lacing... Can't wait to see this fellow full grown!!! I like the head shape and eye color.

Can someone reference me to the page on Vaccinations....I heard it was in here but I have missed over 100 pages of reading.

Pink - He's just beautiful to the eye - such a soft, deep blue!
(my knowledge is too limited for more than that!!)

So - how young/old are you guys able to tell which boys might make the cut??
I have some young ones coming up and am getting curious who should keep on and who should go in the bachelor/soup pot coop...

Don - do you also cull as stringently for the females?
If so, what are your criteria?
(all others' comments are very appreciated, as well!)

Cadeau, I don't know the reason but the males in most varieties have a lot more faults. If I make a mating and most of the male have major faults I will also cull the female sisters. My BC have very nice foot feathering, but this year all the males at hatch will be required to have fuzz all the way to end of toe, and the female must have fuzz at least on the leg.

The problem with the Marans is they have not really been bred for type very much, only for the Dark egg. They should go hand in hand. I believe you will see more people start breeding to the SOP now that the breed is recognised. Remenber if the standard does not list something does not mean it is ok. The SOP is the final word now that they are in the APA.

I can not find the beginning of the conversation. I am pretty sure snowbird started it. . .

I found where he was being quoted - -

Others asked how to do the vaccination and I filled in with how to do the fowl pox on

Hope that helps
