Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

To much vibration and shaking on the conveyor belts and such can cause scrambling.. it is a shipping hazard.... sorry for you loss... Contact the shipper right away with the pix.. While there is no guarantee on hatching eggs... sometimes there is pity.

Okay marans fans... Don had the great idea of making a thread for the cuckoos and whites... I posted it with just cuckoos in err and now I have amended it to include the whites per his request... Feel free to post information/experiences and pictures of the whites as well.

Is the new thread for golden cuckoos as well?

Here is a pic of my latest two broody hens. They seem to go broody in pairs around here. These 2 hens are only part Marans (1 olive egger and one split lav/orp x BCM) They hatched these chicks together in the same nestbox on Easter. DH had to quickly put together this little brooder house for them to share with all thier 10 chicks. The 2 broody mamas mostly get along but sometimes seem to have squabbles about how to raise them lol.

Here's the baby ducks that hatched out the same day (Easter). Now another key west hen went broody so that makes 4/4 of them. I think they are officially the broodiest hens ever!

Chow time. Ever notice how ducks always look like they are smiling? lol

QUESTION:

Have you any idea what might cause 1 row of eggs in my new incubator to be duds?

There are 36 eggs in the incubator. They are 10 days old and I candled them a few minutes ago. . . .

There are 5 eggs in a row that are looking like duds. . . . What are the odds ? ? ?

Dh said no way is it the new incubator. . . . I wonder what the odds are that out of 18 eggs sent by this one breeder . . . . that I would line up the 5 duds in the same row.

Any body ever experience anything like this ? ? Dh is sitting by me ranting that there is no way - - no mechanical way - - that only one row could be effected in the incubator.

What do you think ? ?

Possible, that's why I hand turn, then I also move the eggs 1(1/2) egg width every day to the right (As I roll them to the next side) then they move in a train all the way around the incubator about 3 times in the 21 days...

no egg trays or turners for me...

I really need some help with a question about some Golden Cuckoo Marans I hatched 2 weeks ago before I contact the seller!!

Has anyone every heard of the coming out black with a white dot on their head with a black wash down their legs??? Or a solid brown (no dot on their head) with black legs??

I'm just trying to make sure I'm not jumping to conclusions but the last batch we hatched (from a different breeder) last year were different color browns or blonde colors and didn't have any black on their legs!

I would appreciate any help anyone can give me!!

Thanks
