Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Lisa, I think we have the same bator and while I believe there are some hotter and cooler spots, even with the fan,
I don't think the variance is enough to cause non development...just a slight difference in hatch times, maybe.
Do all the eggs look alike...like they are maybe from the same hen? Or did you load the bator in a way that maybe the
oldest eggs would have come out of the box into the same row in the bator?

It may be a statistical anomaly, but I agree with your DH...I don't see placement in the forced air Hova as the reason

This is my third generation Blue Copper cockerel I have chosen out of 4 to put over
his grandma, mom and aunts. He was the second best for size, but had the best
body to tail transition and lacing. He has great width, but dang I wish his shoulders
were more mahogany/red. He has a single line of feathers all the way to the end of
his outer toes, though

Cooper just turned 20 weeks old:

This is a weird stance, but shows his eye color and lacing better:

Someone needs to start a thread for folks with mysterious Golden Cuckoo chicks. This seems to be a common theme. Black with a white dot is normal... dark legs is not, though they could lighten up. The solid brown sounds mysterious too - and vaguely familiar. Golden Cuckoo are IMHO the least refined variety of Marans at this point, with the fewest breeders who actually know what they have (genetically) and are able to produce birds that breed true.

cp- gorgeous Blue Copper Roo. Amazing hackle/saddle color.

Cpartist... SWEET BIRD... Top notch.... What yard candy... Watch out that nieghboring hens don't sneak on over... What a looker

That would be a pullet I'm thinking the Cuckoo crossed with a Black Copper....solid brown is a cull no barring and Village is right there are so many things bred into the Goldens who knows what you have until you hatch out lots. Even in the Cuckoos people mix in stuff for egg color and feathered shanks you just have to be prepared to cull hard and don't get too mad at a seller because unless they developed the line themselves they wouldn't know what's mixed up in them. Lately I've thought about just starting my own Goldens for that very reason but then who knows what lurks in the Cuckoos? Never boring hatching out chicks from any Marans...

Thanks for the help! Basically the seller said about the same. Her roo throws all.
