Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

White legs would be a clue they don't look Marans though the beak is the wrong color too just pretty chickens

What color would you like for the leg coloring to be ?

Your ladies are BR. Their legs are yellow, if they were white at first it is likely due to their age. These two look like they're over a year old and as BR age the yellow gets more pale. They're body type is more stocky, like a BR, beak is yellow like a BR, and barring is too good for the cuckoo. They should be good layers though if they're not too old.

The adventures of hennyroo part 2... what's the word experts, is the verdict still out on this chicks sex?

I have to say... It is looking like Snowbird made the right call... I think I see pointies and he is now growing wattles... I would still wait for saddle color. it does look more rooish but there isn't a posture pic here... The leg feathering is really nice... let me know if you will be wanting some eggies... (I will make them all girls for you)...

ha ha..

Oh and yes that is mossy... The line is known for it.. Most of em grow right out of it... It looks like this bird will as well. Still crossing my fingers... The photo before this had no wattles... I still wouldn't do a thing till I saw saddle color...

The chick still acts like a pullet, to me. Nothing proud about it, L0L. It just follows the others around meekly and minds it's own business.

When should I start seeing saddle color, if it is in fact a cockerel?

Yep.... Saddle color means cockerel... If you think it acts like a pullet then keep the faith... Let's see a pic of him/her that shows the whole bird... Not so close up if you have one handy... By the way...Nice pix... It is easy to give feedback on such nice closeups.

Geebs, do you know how hard it is to try and take pictures of Marans Roos who are all about the same size, color, age and...10 of them all free ranging and zipping in and out of your feet?

And then try to sort them out so that input can be given. I have sat here at this computer for hours sorting out over 300 pictures and zooming in for leg band #'s LOL

I think I know who everyone is now and I cataloged the picture numbers to match each roo. Now I have to pick the best shots so I can get help knowing who I should keep. 300 pictures might be a little overboard to post!

I am planning on keeping at least 4 roos. But I may have to keep a few more to "compliment" the hens.

Boy do I know that feeling! I can't get any good pictures of my chickens!!! I'm trying a new aproach to chickens with my FBCMs. My layer flock I tried to raise as pets and the roos kept attacking me, so to the freezer they went. Do to the price of getting Marans I don't want to have to cull because of roos attacking me when they could me more correct than the friendly roo. Because of this "neglect of friendlyness" they're extra flighty which means no attacks but no good pics either... Would so love to hear opinions once I do get pics though.

Jeremy~

I'm sorry for asking this again.......how old is this little chicklet??

I am still on the fence with this one....is this the only BCM you have or do you have another one to compare it with around the same age or the same age?
