Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

pictures..... then we will know.. I don't think it sounds like you have been "had".

Do you ever get frustrated with your 'projects' (chicken)? I posted a couple days ago about how hard a time I have been having getting my Marans flock built up. Well today I come home and my nicest roo has somehow managed to break his neck.
The only good thing about the day is I have 6 offspring of his. One for sure is a roo, and 5 week old chicks.

Bout ready to give up on it. ;(

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been there done that... Just put your head down and spearhead the storm... It will be okay... It is aweful to lose your main man... (this is why I carry a spare)... It feels like you will never love again... Heartbreak is like that.... but:.......... sure as the sun will shine tomarrow you WILL find another good rooster... Breathe in the good air... Cocci.... So sorry... Use turmeric in with their feed as a prevenatative... It likely won't help if you already have an large overgrowth already in motion but it is a really great alternative to expensive medicated feeds. I use it in all my feed... adult birds and younstock alike... Sorry Seabreeze

Math-Wow... that really must have been a rough time. Hope things go better in the future.

Seabreeze-Oh! So sorry to hear about the coccidiosis. What a bummer.

All you Oregon folks... You're killing me! Gosh, I love to fish, cook and eat chicken, talk chicken talk with friends... pass on the barley, but I'll have a glass of wine with ya.

Somebody drop me a tow rope as they are flying over Kansas. I'll go for the ride.

I have two nephews and a niece in the Portland area. Maybe I can hitch a ride with my sis sometime if she ever goes out to visit the kids.

My youngest son graduated from high school today. I'm happy... yet sad. It's kind of the end to an era. I really am happy though that he will be going to K-State in the fall. I will have two sons at K-State. It will make it easier to visit both of them.

Okay, back to our regularly scheduled marans program.

BTW... How do you say it? maRANS or MARans?

Sorry this happened to you and your babies. I just went through this nightmare last month. I would get Corid if I was you. I used the liquid 9.6% oral solution. I tried the Sulmet first at recommended dosage and after the course it came back and I lost another chick (lost 3 total). The Corid took care of it for good. I'd never had this problem before and keep my brooders very clean. The reason cocci is so bad in the summer/spring is the humidity and heat can cause the cocci to grow out of control very quickly. I had mine out on the patio in the heat for one day and they had spilled thier water etc and after that started showing symptoms a few days later.
If they are already having bloody poop they are far along in the course of the disease and you need to treat asap. The Corid works by micicing thiamin (vit B1) that the cocci needs to grow and so they are deprived of it thus die. It kicks in really fast so you may have time if you start treatment right away.

I had one little splash baby who had it so bad I though she was gonna die. I found her in the bottom of the pile of chicks sleeping one night when I went to check on her and she was like a limp rag. I really thought she was dead. I slept with her next to me that night so the others wouldn't suffocate her. The next morning was was when I got the Corid and she was feeling better and actually eating that evening.

Okay my Marans friends......I would like all of your opinions and comments if ya'll would like to give them to me. A friend of ours helped me build a website, it's totally under construction and I am working on adding new content, trust me it will be jam packed full of info when I am done but for right now if you have time please cruise by and take a look and tell me what you think. Leave comments if you like, leave testimonials or feedback if you have received chicks or eggs from me....whatever you want...it's all good with me. Basically just looking for some feedback. Couldn't go with my farm name because a farm in Florida already has the domain name so I had to figure something out that incorporated PINK.
