Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but I 'm sure Wynette will let me know!

If you all remember I posted pics of my #7 eggs and almost #7 eggs and I have hatched out a lot of cockerels.

I am going to run them on until September, and then will offer the ones that turn out ok for sale.

I'm not selling them now, but wanted to put out a heads up, if anyone would be interested, to email me & let me know.

So if anyone wants to be kept in touch, please email me at: [email protected]
Here is a pic in case anyone missed what they looked like.

Sooo - working on pics, if it will EVER stop raining...
but in the meanwhile - questions:

If a cockerel has darkish eyes at 4mths (are they still changing?)
correct colored ear coverts
Hackles appear correct, but have a wide black strip on the bottom layer of feathers
Saddle appears as if it will be on the dark side - not sure - not totally grown in

Is he over melanized?

What if he has:
correct colored eyes
correct colored ear coverts
Hackles are on the lighter side, but not "straw" some are totally orange, some have a thin black stripe
Saddle appears brighter than above bird, but still growing in

Is this closer to a melanin balance??

I was looking at it today and wanting to get a picture cool color but I'm just going to cull him I hatched much better Blue Birchens with feathered shanks and better egg color they will still be a project and I'll keep the clean legged girls from that hatch to see the egg color but most of the males have yellowish legs and to my way of thinking they should be slate by now....I just seem to keep hatching and culling but some of mine are looking good enough to keep but I still need a Cuckoo rooster with good shank feathering I'm not getting much shank feathering I have 2 single gene males with partially feathered shanks that I'm going to grow out and I still have the mother so should I cross them back to her she is black with a small spot of very dark copper? I love the size on those boys hoping that they will not have tail white....they show no copper just nice and black colored like a hen.

Have you tried giving her some Poly-Vi-Sol without iron liquid vitamin drops, we had 1 with bad legs and Pink had me give it 3 drops per day for 3-4 days and it's legs improved.

I have been giving her PolyVisol (without iron) and a bit of hard boiled egg daily for weeks now. I have a seriously healthy 4 week old chick with basically no legs. VERY frustrating.

(Last couple of days, I believe the only nutrition she has been getting is from me hand feeding and watering her several times a day. As of today, it appears she can't walk at all. As she grows and gains weight, her legs simply can't cope. I'm going to have to face facts with this chick, I believe. I'm trying to prepare myself. I'm truly at a loss about what more to do for her.)

I know what you mean and understand about how hard it is

hugs to you since my phone won't put it in.

Good morning all

Another day to batten down the hatches later on. More severe weather on the way for the midwest this afternoon, oh joy.

Awoke to 70* and humid, so that pretty much says it all. Hope all stay safe!

Let the chicklets out this morning, only to find that at 10 weeks, my Myrtle has decided to become Myron!

I was starting to have my suspicions as the comb kept growing in. Still nowhere near as big as JR's but getting bigger and the posture was getting more upright. Sure enough, while JR was belting them out, here goes Myrtle, er Myron...

A very abbreviated croak, but a definate crow in the making. Oh well, at least he's blue!

Here's Myron, smack dab in the middle.

Good Morning All, Lately I see some talking about a Ear Covert, what is a Ear Covert ? In the SOP it say Ear Tuft small Tuft of stiff feather like plumage. Is this what is being called Ear Coverts.

Mornin' Don. I would assume they are referring to the round spot of feathering on the ear, right above the ear lobe. I've seen it referred to by both terms, not sure which is correct. What does the APA call it? That's the term I'd go by.

Don- any comment on my actual question?

I promise to use the correct SOP language (or try...) if you promise to share the knowledge, rather than picking at my language.
I know you know the answer
