Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you Pink!!! I'm a horrid perfectionist and so new to chickens (these being my first!) that I can't believe that they're that good!!

We'll see if their eggs are anything to write home about!

I sliced it and raw packed it. .... HOWEVER, I will have to try a hot pack with it next time, because I have an 1" of water space ( without squash) in it. I think that is because the squash softened so much once it was hit with the hot water and processed in the canner.

I did not notice a big difference between the raw pack and hot pack of the green beans.

We LOVE fresh salsa and eat it until we get canker sores from to much citric acid. .. .

With 40 tomato plants in the ground, I do believe I will be canning some tomatoes this year too. The cherry tomatoes are just turning red.
My early girls should be next. Romas should be ready right after that. . .. . . Then there are yellow, celebrity, better boys, and rutgers after that.

I haven't seen the jalpeno yet, but there are some Caribbean slim peppers out there that might make a person start praying for mercy.

I'm right there with you math. I counted my toms when we FINALLY were able to plant yesterday and I have 52.

I think some will be too small to produce because of this weather

I'm not sure if you have them or if you'd be interested but I have three varieties of currant toms that I can send you seeds for next year if you're interested. I'm kind of a seed fanatic. I have two problems..... called heirloom vegetables and chickens!

That goes for everyone btw. If you're in need of some seed hit me up! If it grows I've probably got it.....

Lordy they love watermelon more than anything except maybe mexican cornbread lol.

I have peppers just about big enough to eat now. Both the purple jalepenos and the mammoth green jalepenos. The other pepper plants look good but not quite bearing yet. I got alot of other stuff planted late but do have some black cherry, green grape, and sungold cherry tomatoes that are finally ripe. I didn't do that big of a garden this year because we are too busy to mess with it and can barely keep anything watered LOL!

I would love to give somebody 15 or 20 degrees of weather!! I would be just fine if I could live somewhere that stayed between 50 and 85 degrees all year around.

You guys with your gardens are SOOO lucky!

The weatherman said we had more rain in April than in the entire year of 2010!!
It continues to rain and really pour down, luckily we're only having high winds and hail, not the storms in other parts of the US.

BUT - I still didn't even turn my garden over for the first time yet!!
Think of me while you're enjoying your garden fresh veggies!!

where are you CAdeau... (my back yard???) We have ordered water wings and lifeboats for the chickens.

I have seen more white line disease in my practice this year than previous years and thrush is rampant...

I'm over in northeastern PA (wish I was over there with you guys!)
Please send me over some water wings and row boats!!

Same here- the horses feet are so gross - if you want turnout, you HAVE to deal with mud...

Didn't know you were a vet! My farrier said he's also seeing a record amount of ick, thrush, white line, abscesses, and laminitis, too...

Seriously! We had what TWO days of sunshine!?!? In which I managed to get a severe sunburn because I was so elated to see that bright ball in the sky.

The chucks were super happy and now they're just annoyed! Im not sure we're going to have a summer this year.

I specialize...just feet. I deal with severe atrophy such as Founder and Navicular, club foot, etc. I work out of a rehab clinic.
The best product I have found for all this water and thrush is Thrush buster with Genetian Violet... It gives the best results.

Ya if you were closer we could share some lifeboats... I can't believe the weather... I did get my garden in though... I have planted some stuff just for the chickies..... But they better keep their beaks off of my cherry tomatoes....

Central Oregon was great!!! I got out and bicycled about 7 miles. I got overheated because it was too warm... Ya go figure...to warm in the desert... They said that even the town of Burns.. (high desert) flooded twice this year.. I didn't even know that was possible.

Wow! Where were you when I had my gelding with the nonunion P3!
Great job!

What do you suggest prophylactically??
They do have a "sacrifice area" with 36-48" of shale compacted but they want to be out and about...
They can also get into dry, covered run-in areas.

Syrup - I got sunburned this weekend, too!!
Was just SO glad to get outside!!
