Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Math - I know it's a very personal decision, but do you think a day program or a home health aide might help you with your Dad?

Depending on how he's functioning - Day program might give some nice interaction and socialization (other than you, of course!) to keep him happy and give him some other scenery than your place.

If he's not functioning that well these days, a home health aide could be a HUGE help with helping with sleep/wake cycles, so you can sleep at night; keeping track of him in the daytime, so you don't have to worry about him or anyone/thing else getting hurt; plus, they can help with dressing/feeding/washing, as needed.

Plus, then you'd have more time to enjoy each other, rather than trying to take care of "his business" which sometimes causes resentment...
BUT that is a VERY personal decision to have a "stranger" in your home....

Just a thought... ((hugs))

Susie,

I've got all of mine just locked in the run tonight. Coop doors are all open, the chicks are roosting on top of their little coop. Hopefully, there will be no tenacious predators tonight looking for a chicken dinner! The run is like FT. Knox, but i still worry. On the othe hand, I think I'd rather have my head bitten off than to suffocate to death. Just stepped outside, and it's still 87*, still humid, and still NO breeze. Stagnant...

I know what you mean! Chickens have 3 fans in the big coop and most of them are blowing towards the roosts so they are up there enjoying the fans.
Even the ducks were panting today and they were in the pool! We have most of the acre garden done but it would be nice if temps were down to the 70's for a while...

I'm starting to think I would rather have rain than the heat and humidity now...

Wahoooo!! Of course it counts...plus I've seen the pics of your gardens! How is growing going down there in all that heat?

Well my SPRING crops did not do as well as they should of because of our freeze to sweat weather.....
I just finish harvesting the second round of green beans and am starting to harvest the corn.
I pulled up the green bean plants and planted some OKRA and Lima beans.

WATERMELON, OKRA, LIMA BEANS, Egg Plant and those funny brown peas are the things that grow in our DRY summer heat.
I only plant the first 3 things - - Watermelon, Okra, and Limas .. ..

holy crap!? you are harvesting corn already?!!!!!! I am planning to plant some seed tomorrow evening...haha How many succession crops could you eek out of your garden in a growing season?

You really have a whole acre for a garden?! I think I might have gone blind from jealousy just now hahah...That is fantastic. What all do you plant? and....do you do farmer's markets or how do you use all of the produce?

Hi! I'm new to marans, and I have a question for the experts!

I hatched black copper maran eggs and 4 chicks made it (4 out of 12. Horrible hatch rate, but I digress....)

Of the 4, 3 are the typical coloring, but one has brown markings instead of the white? Can anyone tell me what's up here? All have feathered legs. Thanks!

I got all the chicks into the house finally. What a fiasco. My black ameraucanas are smart little escape artists. Anyway, NOW they are all huddled tightly in a corner! Talk about suffocating! I'm kind of worried. The forcast is that we may get thunderstorms later tonight. They are already scared. I'm afraid they are going to pile on top of each other and suffocate. They are all about 2 month old, some more some a little less. I'm not sure what the odds of them suffocating each other is, but I don't want to take the chance. I will be heading back out there to see how they are doing.

Just went back out to check them... again. They had all quieted down and had spread out to some degree. There were still a few packed fairly close, but they weren't so close as to suffocate.

Fortunately, it has cooled down to a lovely 70 degrees. There is a slight breeze which makes it very pleasant out. Gosh! It is such a gorgeous night out. I wish I had a place I could fall asleep outside while gazing at the the stars. I'd probably wake to thunder, lightning and have to make a mad dash to the house to keep from getting wet!
