The laying hens are not supposed to be penalized for a flopped comb, but I sure wouldn't breed for it. There are other problems with combs in the breed, and sometimes the flopped combs can hide it. Do you have a close up pic of her comb? I prefer my girls to have erect combs.
They most definately are NOT the brightest bulbs in the box, but they are so stinkin' cute! Their eyesight problems do come from the heavy crest feathering. The ones with the lesser crests don't bump into things, like me, the coop, the feeder, the water tub, each other....
And you should see the little roos vying for the highest pecking order. They bend their heads over each others back, and dance around in a circle...so bizarre!
Thanks for the info! Ill see about getting a pic today. Im trying to thin down my BCM flock this week to the best 5. One has the 'straw' colored hackles, 2 have middle toe feathering, this one has the funky comb, but overall theyre not a bad group. Ive got a Copper Hackle Coop roo that I adore, he has a lovely comb, luckily
Seems like we've all been having problems lately, and a lot of us are culling hard. Make sure you give us pics! We are a very visual group, and love pics!
Hi guys, I'm a newbie to the Marans thread. I posted in another spot about what I should do with my butthead named Clyde. He is 6 months old, and he just WON'T STOP CROWING. I realize this is normal, as I went thru this with all the other boys. But he has no manners with the ladies, and he is really trying my patience! I am not supposed to have ANY roos in my town, and I am afraid he will put this situation over the top.
His brother, Pretty Boy, is the exact opposite, but Birchen
I don't know how to handle this. I am not looking for the grand champion, But just some nice eggs, and maybe a few ribbons here and there.
Help! I don't know what to do. Clyde is entered in a show next month, I don't know if I can wait that long for an answer!!Thanks for your ideas, Roberta

well I can help! You can send that birchen boy to me!!! haha
Seriously tho...I have had a couple of naughty sassy boys here and I put them through a training camp of sorts with some of my hens and they sort him out in a snap...and teach him manners. If you don't have that luxury tho..I would say go with your gut..if you are in town and the boy that crows might put your flock in jeopardy...i would weigh that heavily in my decision...and ya add the attitude he has..if it can't be broken out of him with age or etc...then he's probably not gonna be the roo I'd want to have around...but that's just my opinion. I don't keep any that have attitude here because I just don't enjoy dealing with them at all.
Phew! I've got enough problems here with the Marans as it is!
Did any others in her hatch have this problem, or is it only the one?
Two of the 7 chicks from the one breeder had issues. There were two other chicks from that hatch ( different breeds) that I kept and they are not showing any problems.
