Sounds like you have some good prospects over there Donna. I look forward to the pics and hope that Red Neck will heal up alright. I've had roos fight when I was younger and thought for sure they were done for and had them recover....so I'll keep hoping he heals up nicely!

Were the chicks you just hatched from shipped eggs or your own? I'm so behind on everyone's hatching I can't keep any of it straight right now....I always get this way in the fall because its so stinking busy!

I got them from Raven1. Drove an hour to get them! They are so pretty.

You GO GIRL!!!!

haha thanks! I'm so glad one is down....now to get the rest of them. I hope there are just two more. My best guess is that they are siblings and are hunting together as they were all about the same size....they will pay for getting two of my good pullets last night

That's right! I remember you telling me that now! how many did you end up with from the hatch then? And what colors?

. I have more coming after the first of the year when she get more egg production. I hope you are right about Redneck. (he is my only chicken with a name...

not because he is friendly or anything) I need to get him out where he can run and get more exercise but I don't have that right now. I may put him in a breeding pen all by his self or with a couple girls so he has something to run after....

He didn't have a visible injury just a limp. He is better but it is a pretty bad limp. They did that to another roo too he is better but has a mild limp. Redneck was hiding in the nesting box when we found him injured.

We have 2 roosters:

1 Black Copper Marans and 1 Blue Copper Marans (both about 5 mos old)...we would like to start breeding and selling chickens/eggs. Are either of these two roosters worth using? From what I have read, they both have a "non-desirable" but I wasn't sure how easy those were to fix so to speak. I am going to try to add pictures below. We have 1 black copper pullet and 2 black copper hens. The pullet has not started to lay yet and doesn't have the copper color on the neck. I have read in some places that hens should have copper and other places where it doesn't really matter if it is present or not. It that trait more opinion based? She is in the bottom picture just to the left of the rooster. She is only 5 months. Is it possible for her to still get some of the copper coloring? We do have two older hens that have the slight copper coloring on the neck.

Since everyone here is much more seasoned than what I am on this I'm looking for thoughts. Can we use either of these with a hen with the "correct" traits where these are lacking and come out with good chicks or is it better to just cull these and find some roosters that don't have any flaws like these two fellas?

Our Black Copper Rooster - From what I've read, his biggest flaw is the straw coloring???

Our Blue Copper Rooster - there are two different angles on him...his coloring is more like the second picture. He has really dark eyes.

How old does the chicken have to be before they have their permanent color/looks, etc? Do roosters start attacking when they are young or if they are pretty docile now will they most likely stay that way?
