My hawk attacks have stopped now that I run two large dark turkeys with all the freeranging birds. SOmeone on the predator forum told me hawks don't like large black birds. Mine are dark brown and white not black but seeming to work.
The only time the hawks have grabbed any of my chickens is early in the morning before the turkeys are out. I have a few naughty key west birds that sleep 20 ft up in the pine trees. I'm suprised the hawks and owls haven't got them. They get up early and freerange at dawn.
If any other birds get locked out for the night, either hawks, owls, or 4 legged predators get them every time for sure.
Someone told me that juvenile hawks will hunt with thier parents the first year. I have seen as many as 4 here hunting together. The parents and two youngsters.
Barngoddess good luck on your crossroad eggs. Got my fingers crossed for ya.
