Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Mel ~ I'm pretty sure Kathy was poking fun!?? Can't believe Bev would throw all those years of breeding down the tubes, and to freezer camp, no less??

Are these eggs that you picked up at the show this weekend? Our batch of Blue Marans eggs should hatch Nov 13th so just a bit before yours!

My birthday is the day before your daughter's!!

Problem with hawks is usualy seasonal here in No CA. When they migrate may see many at one time. I have a lot of grape vines and although most are free range their coop doors are open and covered and they go inside. As far as I know only one bantam has been taken by a hawk. Susan

My hawk attacks have stopped now that I run two large dark turkeys with all the freeranging birds. SOmeone on the predator forum told me hawks don't like large black birds. Mine are dark brown and white not black but seeming to work.
The only time the hawks have grabbed any of my chickens is early in the morning before the turkeys are out. I have a few naughty key west birds that sleep 20 ft up in the pine trees. I'm suprised the hawks and owls haven't got them. They get up early and freerange at dawn.
If any other birds get locked out for the night, either hawks, owls, or 4 legged predators get them every time for sure.

Someone told me that juvenile hawks will hunt with thier parents the first year. I have seen as many as 4 here hunting together. The parents and two youngsters.

Barngoddess good luck on your crossroad eggs. Got my fingers crossed for ya.

Good to know, Debbi. I will make sure to do that. Thank you! (Kind of like raising 1 bantam white rock frizzle in with all my free-ranging large fowl!!)

Yes, Kathy was poking fun. I can assure you, Bev Davis won't be giving up her work with Marans anytime soon. (I really MUST post a picture of her watch. Best watch I've ever seen!

) Wonderful, generous lady, Bev Davis. I REALLY enjoyed meeting her at Crossroads. The whole of the MCC USA are fine people. Very well represented at Crossroads. A great group to be involved with - and fun too!
