Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Do you find a correlation between feather quantity to the length of toe?
Like the shorter the toe, the more leg feathering? Or am I just overthinking this?

I do not think that there is a correlation. I myself have always tried to breed away from the rudimentary toe in any feather leg fowl I was working with. The SOP does state no deduction for it though.

Geebs..we should get together for the Stevenson show. We tried for that this year but it didn't happen. When is the next one?

Roberta ~ My two BCM boys with the nice shank/toe feathering do not have the shorter outter toes, in fact none of my Marans do. Out of 14 Silkies here, all heavily feathered shanks and feet, only one has one shorter outside toe. She is also missing a toe too. While I wouldn't toss an otherwise nice bird out of the breeding pen, I would sure try to steer away from the Rudimentary toes. JMO

Yeah, I have no plans for him yet, only a week old, I have a splash girl that has not real short toes, but tiny nails. But she laid a pathetic color egg. Will wait till spring to make any decisions.
And thanks, all, for the support.

Roberta~
I agree with Don and believe there is not necessarily a correlation, but, and this maybe purely coincidental, I notice in my chicks that the shorter the toe the heavier the shank feathering.

Has anyone else ever noticed that before?

The majority of BC and Wheaten Marans I have hatched were on the heavy feather side like the Langshan Standard picture. I have yet to have one with the rudimentary Toe. I have had lots of Brahma with the rudimentary toe. When the fowl with the eventual rudimentary toe are young they had a real small toe nail and it eventually fell off. Some judge will DQ for the rudimentary toe though.
