Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I haven't ever had one fall off but have had some birds with heavy feathering with a toe like that... and as far as the judges... It is NOT supposed to be a DQ or Fault however some judges will DQ for feathered legs still... It is the roll of the dice and the experience of the judge and his knowledge... anytime you show anythng you are being judged by a human being... always room for their ideas etc...

Have one other thought worth mentioning. When we make improvements with our flock either with culling or breeding practices we will still have to keep our eyes open that they do not show up later. I have found that with fowl it is a lifetime of continually working with faults. They can be excellent one year and the next , all the faults show up.

Yep I agree... next year you will probably get those rudimentary toes Don!!! LOL

Don: I am only quoting you from earlier about the ABA and the APA not marking down for those...

I have noticed that as well with a couple of birds, why does it fall off?

Kim, just my own observation but I believe it is from lack of enough Blood getting to the nail since it is so small.

Or color

It's all good Wynette.... Just a little fun.... We all know that eventually everything shows up... Even wheaton, split combs and rudimentary toes etc... We cull and cull and cull and then when you add some hybrid vigor or go to another color... All bets are off.. That's the way it is.... If we could control everything this wouldn't even be worth talking about...
