Wow, how's that for thinking alike? What you are showing is the makings of a Carnation comb. You are right in assuming the pullets will express it at a later date, or they will most definately carry one gene for it.

I believe Bev's site mentions sprigs in one type of marans I don't remember which but you can read up on it.

These are not sprigs, they are a Carnation comb that is required for the Penedesenca breed. Obviously, the Pene was crossed into the Marans lines at one point, and instead of these "project" birds staying at home or being culled, they were passed on to the unsuspecting consumers as, "Marans". These are, in all reality, a cross, ie, MUTTS.

I am glad I read about the Carnation combs here on this thread so I did not have too much time invested in these chicks. I am very bumbed as it is....

Thanks Kim! I find it hard to believe that some people that have been breeding the breed for some time, have never seen this before? I have received quite a few e-mails about this. JR the BC has at least a "pleasant?" looking one?

That little BCM cockerel of mine that got the double dose, is totally hideous!!!

You are very right when you say it "is a much wider problem than is being talked about." Think of have many people out there are buying Marans eggs and not reading this thread. I know the person I purchased my "Marans" eggs from on ebay is not the same person discussed on this thread and he is still selling eggs. There will be more of these birds somewhere....

I too was a little surprized about that..but it's out there now and with photos. Hopefully it will be recognized more easily now...but it doesn't reach everyone out there breeding them.

Wonder if I should sell some hatching eggs on ebay....advertised as "Carnation Combed Black Copper and Blue Copper Marans" and post several photos displaying their beautiful "Crown" and see what kind of response I get.

And for those of you just gasping at the thought of what I just suggested above about the Carnation Combed Marans.........I was being COMPLETELY SARCASTIC!!!!!!!!!!

Yep....Carnation. Sorry.

They taste just the same as a bird that has a good comb.

Yes, I just do not want to bother with them that long. It is not worth the feed this time of year.

Yes, I have gotten this problem from eggs all over the country! It is not just one seller, or even an Ebay thing. It is not regional, it is nationwide. The gene pool in this country is small enough as it is, and if the spread of these combs continue, in a matter of years, I believe just about everyone's lines will carry it...that is if they don't already. Once I finally get rid of this trait, I will close my flock or at least test mate everything new that comes here first!
