Beautiful garden jungle! Reminds me of Costa Rica or Panama.....ahhh:-) Lets see I saw angels trumpet's , bogenvia's, maybe some shafflera's. Where are you hiding the plumerias and Costa's?

Costas.. do you mean gingers? I have a few globbas, hedychium/butterfly ginger, kaempheria (sp) and a few other kinds of gingers including one root I bought from the grocery store and planted it to see if I could get it to bloom LOL!

It's not fair to flaunt that sunshine in front of those of us that get limited sun throughout the year.

Beautiful gardens!

My Geraniums, Alyssum are still blooming and one of my Autumn Sedums has just started.

Thanks I do have to put the tropical stuff in the greenhouse in the winter here though. SOme of it is just semi tropical and will die to the ground and come back but some things have to go in the greenhouse.

Just an added bit of info, the roos will be sex links and will NOT breed true. You will get pot luck on his off spring. Found that out the hard way, but it was a nice surprise in the long run. Got colors I would not have gotten if he were not a sex link

When I say he will not breed true, you will get some babies with barring and some will not. I don't even think his offspring will breed true, but I have not really figured that out yet. I think the pullets with barring will breed correctly, cuz they only have one copy of that gene, but any roos with barring can only have one copy and should also breed like a sex link.... I DON'T really know if this is right so if not please someone educated me in NONE genetic terms.

If he is from Copper parents then you will get gold or red leakage in the cuckoo males that are produced. They will be Marans but they will be Marans that are of crossed varieties and will not breed true. For example...if bred back to Black Copper.

Cuckoo are sex linked...even the females, but they can only pass along their cuckoo gene to their male offspring. Male cuckoo's pass along 1 copy of the gene to both female and male offspring.
Flgarden is right about breeding the Cuckoo male

It would produce all barred babies, but the males would still be heterzygous and only have one copy of the barring gene. If a non cuckoo/barred female is used..she doesn't have a cuckoo gene to pass on the to boys, they will only get one copy from the Cuckoo father, but could be bred back to a female cuckoo and then would produce males that have 2 copies (homozygous) as they should. A heterzygous male cuckoo (only carries one copy of the cuckoo/barring gene) will be colored like that of the female cuckoo's vs the lighter color of the homozygous males.

Thanks Pink you are a well of infomation

yes they lay white eggs, we left the blue copper marans girl with that pen so we could know when she lays!

Good thinking!

I don't have any white egg layers....do you know of any of your Andie friends that may have hatching eggs or do you have any?
big_smile.png

well... the Andies thread isn't as popular as some threads

so we don't know many who raise them. We just separated our pens into the breeder groups so no eggs yet- hoping by mid Dec we will have good ones!

Yes, those are it (Costus). They are all very pretty but my all time favorite is Barbatus!

Andies being the Andalusians? Very pretty birds but bit on the flighty side for my taste.

You should be able to grow all that stuff in San Diego, you are practically tropical

SO NOT fair lol. You also have an easier time with the succulents because you aren't as humid as here in the summer. I grow some cacti and succulents here but have to keep them where they don't get direct rain and the heavy dew we have here or they will rot. There are some kinds that can take more rain but most can't.
I think some of the Keys and Miami and the tip of FL are a zone 10 (similar to SD except the humidity).
I love going to Fairchild Botanical Gardens in Miami and the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead FL...there are so many cool plants there. My home away from home LOL!

Sorry I got busy. My Whites hatched out last time white and a dusty grey. All but 2 had the nice pink leg, the other 2 had slate legs.
