Guess what I just discovered in my 7 1/2 week old chicks??? Can you guess??? I am so disgusted...

Ok, I'll tell you. One definate carnation, one more possible carnation in a pullet, and on the one cockerel that was looking promising...looks like a sprig coming on! So out of 5 chicks, I have 2 definate carnations, 1 possible carnation, and 1 side sprig!

You think so? I can't tell cuz this is my first experience. Yes peachick does say on her site that she started with blue copper. I actually love the way the blue copper looks. But just cuz you love something doesn't always mean you get it. I also love wheaten ameraucana but just could not get them to hatch. I tried many dozens and only one hatched. But blue/black/ splash ameraucana I hatched! So guess I have b/b/s Ams. Lol

Am I correct to assume that marans follow the blue/black/splash rules?

thanks! He is supposed to be solid blue. His is from eggs from Peachick. I think those eggs travelled the furthest.

Your welcome.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I am positive he is not a solid Blue Marans. Do you see the red leakage in his hackles and saddles? He has copper/red in his genetics somewhere. So don't be surprized if you get birds that have copper from his matings.
I believe that Peachick started her solid Marans with a Copper rooster..I can't remember exactly, but I know she stated once that she had a copper bird in the mix.

Hi everyone I am interested in the Marans I have been reading the thread daily ever since I joined BYC. I have been researching for breeders in my area which is Eastern Idaho and I am not having that much luck but my search continues. I have several breeds that I am looking at and the Marans and then the Cochins are my top breeds that I really like so off I go to continue reading and lurking since I dont have any chickens yet I dont post lol

Hi Christie! Wish I was in Hawaii right about now, brrrrrrrrr here. Pink is right, if the breeder started with Blue Coppers, what you have is a genetically Blue Copper bird that is hiding the gold gene. I saw some red in that pic too. And yes, the Marans follow the Andalusian Blue Gene rules.

Don,

He says he is more than willing to hatch and photo document the Penne Influence. I set him up with a new blog today, will have it open soon for him to start posting to. He will be on here soon too. So he has these chicks he hatched already. Will start getting their photos. He is charging his camera and I will set up a photo cage in the brooder house for him to use. We also have plenty of leg bands to ID various hatches for tracking.

He will need eggs to keep hatching and documenting so anyone willing to send eggs for this I am willing to cover the shipping on them. Those willing to have their eggs test hatched please include a sheet with them telling your flocks background, and then which Roo was used and if you ID flocks of hens in any way that as well.

He will enter this info into excel and track it there as the hatches mature.
