Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I had a little bantam hen, refused to go inside. One night it went down to 5*, I thought she would be a popsicle all alone.
She was fine. And continued to do it.

My eggs in the 2 incubators are hatching! I set 12 BBS Birchens, 14 Birchens and 10 WHeatens, along with a few barnyard mixes (Kids wanted them.. LOL) So far I have 4 Birchens and a Wheaten(I hope, it is very light colored and can't tell yet if it came out of a bbs shell or not, will investigate more later), I also have several others that are pipped! One of the barnyard mixes has pipped, that will be a wheaten roo over a BSL. I'll post pics later... Lots of chirping going on!

Look at those puffy cheeks! Cute!

Your cockerel is pretty....is he suppose to be a solid Blue Marans or is he a Copper? Oh and he will definitely get his louder crow on, sooner than you think too. I love when they first start to crow.

thanks! He is supposed to be solid blue. His is from eggs from Peachick. I think those eggs travelled the furthest.

Your welcome.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I am positive he is not a solid Blue Marans. Do you see the red leakage in his hackles and saddles? He has copper/red in his genetics somewhere. So don't be surprized if you get birds that have copper from his matings.
I believe that Peachick started her solid Marans with a Copper rooster..I can't remember exactly, but I know she stated once that she had a copper bird in the mix.

I don't worry too much when it's just cold, it's the wind and the wet that is coming here soon along with the freezing temps. May have to set up a tarp or something if I can't get them in. The boys all huddle together on top of the nest boxes, but the girls sleep solo.

IMHO...the best thing a person can do is to "Super Cull" and get rid of the problems, thereby developing your "own" flock. I look forward to the day when "Pink Flamingo Marans" are held with as high of respect as Bev Davis birds. When you buy eggs or birds from another flock, you only open up your "own" flock to any defect that they may carry. IMHO.

I couldn't agree more. I don't post much here as I am in the quail section often. I have had some Marans with too much red on breast (culled), white feathers on shanks (dq and culled). I love Bev's birds. Superior quality and breeding. Now, I worked on cuckoos for 2 years now for egg color and feather shanks (keeping the two together) and finally have accomplished that goal with the help of Bev.

Howdy, quailladyoffortmyers!!! Good to see you here. I agree with you about the Davis birds - and your Cuckoos - that have FABULOUSLY feathered legs! They are ALL thriving, btw!!!!

My girls are such pansies!! They have themselves all tucked in before 4:30 each day. All I have to do is close the door!!!! And it has barely gone below freezing here yet this year.

Should that include rudimentary toes? I could post pictures of those ...

Hi, the Rudimentary is considered something not to breed for , but is not a fault in SOP. on Page #31 of the 2001 SOp it states feather leg breed are not to be penalized for the Rudimentary toe.
