Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The APA does not want us to use the pictures. I have some old poultry books with pictures like this saying they belong to the department of Agriculture. I believe some of the APA pictures were copied from somewhere. I planned on giving the SOP reference point to look at the pictures. We should be able to get actual Chickens with these faults if we work at, in the past 6 months I have seen most of them here on the forum.

I understand the APA stance on the SOPs as it is their main source of funding for the Club.

I've got lots of them! And I took pictures too!

Jacob, This is the type and color BC male I used in my breeding program. I can not really fault him. I would not breed female with very high tails to him though as then you would get a lot of high tail young. If you can just pick your best 1-2-3- females and single mate so you know where the young are from. The male is very nice type though, too bad there are not more around like him.

Where's this male??? Must go back and look now.

Thank you!

Did you notice the short boxy keel on this bird? Or is it just me? He is a lovely big boy, but something about his chest/breast bothers me. I hope a full on side view will show I am wrong.

Morning all! Set up the new Dickey yesterday, it's holding temps beautifully. Our son is very excited about having it. Today I am going to rearrange the brooder house so we have a spot for photo documenting the chicks as they grow.

Can't believe it December already, fall sure did fly by this year. Had to laugh the weatherman had the word cool flashing in blue saying we are about to "chill down" then reported highs would be in the 70's. Funny what cool and cold can be depending on where you live.

Kim, I see things also but believe he is one of the better breeding BC males I have seen on here, I thought we like the Chunky Monkeys right.

How does a person go about correcting the short keels Don? I had one male from Florida with a very short keel and stared at him forever wondering how on earth a person would breed that out. I also had an original Black Copper hen that had this. Can it be breed out? Would you use a bird with a better chest?
